Re: European Club Cup & Club Cup for Women 2023

Lan Yao I see has the WGM application "open" at 2023 3rd FIDE Council, so she doesn't need the norm, hopefully she will win a board prize Good luck to all the players today Yes, it never hurts to have an extra norm in case there's an issue with one of the original three. I do hope that her playing ...

Re: European Club Cup & Club Cup for Women 2023

There have been reports of at least 30-40 players feeling unwell at the tournament. The word from the organisers is that this is a "light season virus" which should pass in a day or two with advice to rest and stay hydrated. They did extend board order submission by an hour today to allow captains ...

Re: World Junior Championships 2023

When an enormous proportion of the field have low ratings (for GM norm purposes sub 2200 which is c60%) it's simplistic to just say that it's all fine because you can just disregard a couple of games. Short of having a near perfect tournament (and that means winning games with white and black - even...

Re: Transgender chess players

The existence of women’s titles does not harm men in any way (in fact, they do the opposite - for the reason you give - more titles players). So the only purpose for getting rid of them IMO would be if there was an established consensus (led by women I might add) that their existence harms women and...

Re: Transgender chess players

Why hasn't that been happening in the last ten years (or perhaps much longer) then? One might also incidentally point out that transgender women have the right to use female bathrooms under UK law. Banning them from female only tournaments would have no impact on that. I wonder if bans from female ...

Re: Transgender chess players

Well the bottom line is that that if FIDE allows transgender people to compete in women's sections and from that they can share the same bathroom, there are hundreds, if not thousands, if not tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of men around the world, that will claim to be a woman so t...

Re: Can Armageddon games be rated?

Whatever the rules say (which is obviously rather important!) I would have thought that the simple argument against rating Armageddon games is that they are, by design (not incidentally as can be the case eg. in the last round of a tournament) played with different results meaning different things t...

Re: 2023 National Stages

It was advertised by the ECF as FIDE rated The semi finals were The Rating report on the FIDE website for the final seems to show 12 players each having drawn Ok, thanks Mick. So all the wins not submitted or missed out for some reason. Not just that Peter hadn’t played a rated game since the 1960s...

Re: British Championship 2023

Can any of the statisticians out there see if it's possible to find the last time (if 9-round and 11-round tournaments can be compared) where only two players scored over 2/3 for the tournament (in this case, Adams and Steven Jones). For 11 rounds, that would be maybe 7.5/11? Am I right to think th...

Re: British Championship 2023

May I make the case for keeping the default time at 30 minutes? When I travel to a Congress, I expect to be able to play chess. I noticed in this year's British after the default time had expired the arbiters were efficiently offering those defaulted against the opportunity to play a rated 'friendl...

Great result for Steven Jones, securing am IM norm in style with the black pieces whilst simultaneously punishing the board 3 players who presumably thought to guarantee themselves a share of the prize money with that draw!
Not really
