Re: ECF AGM 2022

I don't seem to have received either of these emails, which is a good way of having it brought home to you how unimportant you are as an ECF member. I wouldn't mind seeing fewer pissing contests in ECF elections about people's business experience and how important it makes them. Quite a lot of very ...

Re: 2022 US Chess Championship

Moradiabadi doesn't really play the Petroff as I could only find one game of his with it. Guess he was trying to catch his opponent in an opening he didn't expect but playing an opening you clearly don't know that well against a 2747 is asking for it. Caruana says that winging it against Domínguez,...

EDIT: Eswaran, who has had a poor tournament up to now, should beat Abrahamyan shortly.
It was even poorer before they mullered Zatonskih in the previous round tbf.
Another win for her tonight.

Re: 2022 US Chess Championship

Caruana well worth a look: ....h5-h4, ...Rh6 and ...Kf8 and a chunky advantage to show for it.

EDIT: Eswaran, who has had a poor tournament up to now, should beat Abrahamyan shortly.

Re: 2022 US Chess Championship

Fans of Swiercz's clock handling may like to know that he appears to have taken 44 minutes over his eighth move, though I'm not entirely sure that the Chess24 records can be regarded as entirely canonical

The amount of online chess in the world must exceed the amount of OTB chess by a fantastic margin, and ditto the number of online players.

Re: 2022 US Chess Championship

I think Corden v Smylov is a bit different - I wonder if Smyslov knew that 5...d6 was likely inferior but was avoiding 5...Bc5 (and 5...Nxe4 which is relatively drawish) precisely because that was where you were likely to get caught out by home preparation. Instead he got himself a Philidor with ......
