Re: Brian Eley

It should be borne in mind that fear of institutions and connected people being sued was not, in fact, a particular feature of such events at the time we are discussing. Of course, covering up multiple allegations of child abuse over a long period would be reprehensible conduct even if this had been...

Also, we could consult the proprietor of Chess Direct who might be able to shed light on these matters.
Does anybody know him personally? They might be best-placed to introduce the subject.

Re: Brian Eley

There are times when being contrarian and provocative is just unfunny, and there are times when it is wholly inappropriate.

Re: Carlsen resigns on move 2

it is always galling to be accused of cheating, when one has, in fact, achieved success by legitimate methods
Ho ho.

Other than that belly laugh, very much not worth the skim.

chess24, New in Chess and chessable were all owned by the Play Magnus Group which has accepted a takeover offer from chess.com.
Hmm, what does that mean for Chess24's live coverage
We may find out

Re: Pedro Almodóvar

I found Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown very funny. Less sure about some of his later works, though Volver was excellent. Me, I prefer the later works: it's a matter of taste, of course, and there's plenty to be enjoyed in the earlier films, but I prefer the latter-period, more contemplat...

I find it oppressive that it is assumed that my opinion is the same as everyone else's.

Re: IM Michael Basman

It might, but only if you assume that Penrose playing would have enabled England to get a better result than ½-3½. I think most people would assume that including your best player and omiting your weakest would improve your chances of getting a better result Penrose's subsequent results at Lugano g...

Re: Women's Candidates matches

First of four games in the semi-final sees Muzychuk A playing 3 g3 against Lie's e6 Sicilian, for a kind of Tarrasch position. (I seem to remember Luke McShane losing a game in this variation and it's not clear to me what the pros and cons are compard to the actual Tarrasch.)

Re: IM Michael Basman

Why was Basman, second reserve, playing in that match? I can see that Clarke seems to have been out of sorts, but why was Penrose absent?
