Re: Winners and Losers under 'Membership Only'
You conveniently omit the alternate scenario. Game fee goes up. More organisations stop paying Does it actually happen that organisations leave the ECF and run their events ungraded? Outside of Yorkshire and Lancashire is there evidence of this? It's not the same that Game Fee goes up and the amoun...

Re: Winners and Losers under 'Membership Only'
I realised quite early on that my club (or the members of the club, if you prefer) would lose out badly, but I thought we might be an exception. It wasn't until I spoke to the members of other Oxfordshire clubs that I realised that they all seemed to be in the same boat. The per head membership pro...

Re: Winners and Losers under 'Membership Only'
] The ECF is a federation made up of member organisations such as counties, leagues and congresses. It is those organisations which have the right to vote, such rights being delegated to their council member. It's also those organisation who currently pay a cost to be the voting members. This tradi...

Re: Winners and Losers under 'Membership Only'
a) Ask everyone for the £24 club subscriptions and at the same time ask for another £18 from anyone who is likely to play any league chess. You might at a pinch be able to reduce the club sub, but could get away with £6 ? That's conditional on two issues. First you have to persuade the OCA to re...

Re: Winners and Losers under 'Membership Only'
It's taken a while for me to realise, but I guess that basically the ECF is asking for more financial support from players who play the least number of competitive games. Have I got that right? Got it in one. Conversely less financial support from those who play the most. Congresses will able able ...

Re: Winners and Losers under 'Membership Only'
Under the proposed membership system, the player will make one payment per year (probably via their club would be my guess). Under the current system, the player pays separately via each club they play for, via their county team, via each congress they play in, via their ECF membership fees, etc. S...

Re: Winners and Losers under 'Membership Only'
What is is relevant is how much players pay in total to the ECF and that is going up, whatever the system, because of the loss of the government grant. I'm sorry but it's immensely relevant and the case for membership is not helped by the refusal of the advocates of membership to discuss the financ...

Re: Winners and Losers under 'Membership Only'
And is there an intention to conduct a more formal consultation on any revised proposals through counties, clubs etc? I think that's unlikely. It will be a "take it or leave it" motion at the October meeting. The underlying problem that club players are being asked for more whilst Congresses are be...

Re: Winners and Losers under 'Membership Only'
What clubs do is collect money from players, and pass it to the ECF (via their league or county). This is what happens now, and it is what will happen in the future whether the charging scheme is per player or per game. What we are trying to get to grips with is whether the amounts paid by clubs wi...

Re: Winners and Losers under 'Membership Only'
the MCF covers the entry fees and any game fee - is this unusual? I would have said so. You can have players who are not part of the local club scene, either because they are "... bussed in ..." or because they only want to play at weekends. You need to cover venue hire costs and refreshments as we...

Re: Winners and Losers under 'Membership Only'
Most clubs (in my experience) charge a flat fee regardless of the number of league games you play. In most parts of the country it would be impossible to obtain an A grade by only playing in matches in one league team for one club. So the A grade player has to enter Congresses, county individual ev...

Surely you would download the new grading list and run an automated update? vlookup is your friendDave Tipper wrote:and manually adding 300 + grades to all the players on the results spreadsheet I update.

Re: Can I 1800 become a GM or is it to late?
Maybe your opponents are exhausted after work as well? It's a difficult balance. On the one hand you need to play enough to have sufficient experience of different positions and opponents. On the other hand, you shouldn't play when your motivation has gone walkabout or you are exhausted whether fro...

Re: Winners and Losers under 'Membership Only'
My thinking is this: people who are around Category 'C' would pay a lot more under a membership scheme then they would under game fee, whilst people who are in 'A' category would pay a lot less. The current theory is that a Game Fee of 70p can be regarded as approximately equivalent to the £ 18 me...

Re: Finally found it again.
Having said that, the last modification of Schiller's Wikipedia entry claims that he first reached 2300+ standard in the 80s and was awarded the FM title in 1998. That's not borne out by the rating lists at http://www.olimpbase.org/, which don't show the FM tag to his name. However it was around th...
