Re: British Championship 2023

Chess-Results shows Chapman losing by default in Rd7, as Lawrence says, with Sheila Jackson, Alan Punnett, and David Fryer joint winners on 5.5/7. No idea if that is correct, but he might have been a victim of the early start? I wondered that myself. There are four games in the O65 showing as defau...

I feel quite sure that Terry Chapman has 6/7, but am confident of little else.
Chess Results is showing he lost by default ?!?

Steven is originally from Warrington, played him quite a lot before he went to University in northern tournaments
Yes, he played some games for Urmston in the local leagues a few years ago.

Half point buys? Is that where you bribe your opponent to accept a draw? :)

Re: Why would a tournament persist with QPF time controls?

I don't like giving out lifelines to players who have squandered their time with long thinks. That's an odd way of looking at it. If there are no increments, then sooner or later someone is going to lose on time if the game is not resolved by other means, even if both players have been moving admir...

Re: Arbitration question

Just one further point - if a player castles 'correctly' (in as much as he touches the king before the rook) but the king in fact has no legal move, does the obligation to move a touched piece then devolve to the rook? No. Are you sure about this? The rules state - 4.3 Except as provided in Article...

Re: Harry Lamb RIP

I remembered another anecdote about Harry, some time before the 'real' games I mentioned in my previous post. When I moved to the North West in 1975, my first club was Knutsford. The club secretary knew Harry from when he had provided advice and assistance for the Knutsford Rapidplay congress. He pe...

If I were making a sporting comparison, I'd say that having white in chess is an advantage of about the level of being at home in football.
The advantage is quite a bit greater in football.

Re: Harry Lamb RIP

I first played Harry back in 1980 in the Manchester League. The game was adjourned, and he invited me to his home to finish the game (a draw). I remember one of his sons being there, a young boy, presumably either Ian or Michael. After my long absence from chess, it was good to see him still active ...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

After a three year break, Altrincham & Hale Chess Club meetings restarted this week. The club's last meeting had been in March 2020, at which point Covid put an end to things. When things started to open up in the summer of 2021, we found that we were unable to continue at our previous venue. With C...

Northumberland Chess Congress?

Not the Northumbria Masters, but the congress that usually takes place in September at North Shields. Does anyone know if it is happening this year? I can't see it on the ECF Calendar.

Re: Too much dishonesty in chess

Not recording if one player has less than 5 minutes: Allows that player to have more thinking time, for being bad at time management It's not necessarily being bad at time management, it's simply moving more slowly than your opponent. Anyway, not recording moves carries the risk that you won't be a...

Agree with you on these. "I was like..." instead of "I said..." is particularly irritating.

So if the arbiter observed the flag, the game ends. Any subsequent player agreement to draw is void, no?
Well, yes, but your original post implies that the draw agreement was before the flag fall was noticed, not subsequent.
