Re: Media comments on chess

Looking forward to Garry's music choices. I expect one or two from chess the musical, nil of Nigel Short's music tastes. A bit of Frankie (Sinatra or Goes to Hollywood). Some opera or even heavy metal (Ecstacy of Gold) and a piano concerto. No glam rock. But a bit of 'Pussy Riot' will tie up with so...

Re: Senior opportunities in 2018

Is there zero tolerance on start times in senior tournaments?
Not that I have a problem with early starts as it will mean I'll be finished and ready for my afternoon nap. (It's a power nap when I'm at work!).

Re: 2018 Wijk aan Zee 12 - 28 January

I can see the need to introduce VAR in the very top level tournaments. I got in late from chess last night to be told that Chelsea won 1-0. But clearly not what actually happened on the night. But we have a ref making intentional diving decisions, etc. And getting it wrong. This is why England will ...

Re: Media comments on chess

Evening Standard James Olley 10 Jan. King's castle is crumbling as Gazidis quietly lays the foundations for a new ruler (for Arsenal's manager). ....The pieces are quietly being moved into place but Gazidis has so far proved unwilling to make the checkmate move by taking the King, even if relations ...

Re: County Championship Consultation

I think Alex has a difficult job based upon some conflicting objectives within ECF's objects. Important to give responses but also get counties and unions to get views too and feedback to them. We also ought to try to rule out some of the motions because of a likely limit on the time for this at the...

Re: Membership requirements for British Championship events

Michael the British is Fide rated - hence SILVER not applicable & need gold to grade. Unless Non-English but need Fide in advance. Not sure why you are trying to over complicate matters.

Re: Invoice from ECF / Paul Buswell ?

John if you put a grading file together you will have to give details of where the bill gets sent to. Make a call if you have to. The person who was sending bills out passed away some time ago.

Re: County Championship Consultation

I was hoping for more chess not less. Some disappointment. Anyway I will not be making snap judgement as quite honestly I have got to concentrate on the (un)fair funding settlement for schools. So will respond in February. I'll try not to think to harshly on what does the ECF do for me. There is eno...

Re: Average of all graded players in the UK

:D The average of all graded players is probably a 50 year old male player with first name beginning with M or N. Possibly English. ECF rates all games that qualify. Fide has some quirks with substantially stronger or weaker players than your rating. As for conversions I'm not that great believer in...

Re: Should this move attract a penalty?

I think we should use the 12 days of Christmas being nice to organisers, arbiters and players and stop the whines on ECForum.
My last post made me sound like a Grumpy Old Man.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Re: 'Update your ECF Contact Information' email

Worried by the e-mail until I saw the ECF site. To be fair the office was closing for Christmas. Then got an e-mail from someone who used to play for a Surrey Club. Not great that some of the less professional sites can be apparently hacked. I try to do all my business with ECF over the phone becaus...

Yes it is about time a thread was posted. Are Gawain and the other losers going to jump straight into the Open.
Hopefully tomorrow not too much transport disruption.
I'm playing midweek. And looking forward to it.

Re: To grade or not to grade

A game with a default is not graded in ECF grading rules. A player arriving late may incur a lesser penalty under competition rules than not turning up at all. If a game is played then providing it meets the grading requirements it should be graded. I have been in the position where a substitute pla...

Re: Bridge not a Sport (ECJ now agree)

Makes sense to me that ECJ now agree. As for the future we will not be able to go to the ECJ. Hoping to get Mike to play a simul soon. As for VAT break on football there are a number of home matches that you have to book to qualify. I'm always up for a game of extreme chess (played on a mountain). H...
