Thanks Richard, No. 51 in the 140-159 section but how about if I am transfered to the 120-139 section as the rules allow, how "unlucky" then? :)

Re: Player of the Year 2012

Justin - North Shields pubs ... you may be thinking of the Wooden Doll or Magnesia Bank ... I would also recommend the Cumberland Arms and Salutation in Tynemouth. All fine real ale venues. Thanks Colin & Justin, you have kindly mapped out my routes for the week, Whitley Bay via North shields and T...

Re: Player of the Year 2012

Ian - re:accommodation - I live in the area, but confess to having little experience of the hotels or guesthouses to draw on. Good luck, and hope to see a few of you up here. Thanks for the information Colin, Martineau Guest House looks very nice, but was unfortunately booked for the days I require...

Re: Player of the Year 2012

I think the best way of supporting Lara is for us all to send an e mail to the ECF office expressing total support for Lara Yes Ernie, I agree , also for all chess players who can, make our way to the British Championships this year and help make it a successful one, for all the right reasons. Anyo...

Re: How do you avoid disputes at the board?

Hi Roger. The two things I think Ian should take from that game. Is don't give up the White plus so easily and, if you can, avoid time trouble. Wise words Geoff, and I believe it is also the advice Roger was conveying. Having analysed The position after 27...Rf6 I cant believe now, how I could not ...

Re: Do mistakes belong in chess?

The answer I believe Mats, is yes they do. I believe that when you have the move it is your turn to make the least costly, yet most effective mistake. If you consider the move 1.e4 the theorists will say yes correct move controlling d5 and f5, opening up the diagonal for the Bishop, playing for the w...

Re: March 2012 update now live

"Grand Prix" crew speaking. Why do you think I need a nudge? Hello Richard, I am eagerly awaiting the next GP update, If I am in the top 50 of my section which I believe I maybe for the first time in my life! I can then show my dearly beloved, that those weekends away I have been having were not sp...

Re: Manchester Rapidplay Sunday 25 March 2012

Mick, My first Rapidplay in over 16 years, Nice comfortable venue, the online entry was convenient, a big thanks to your fellow controllers for a smoothly run event, The only niggle was the size of the pieces, for this old fogey they seemed a bit on the small side, so perhaps a slight upgrade if pos...

Re: How do you avoid disputes at the board?

Hi Ian. The mistake was of course going into an ending.. Geoff, I did not plan on the game reaching an ending as after playing 18. PxN winning a whole piece and with an hour left on my clock, I was expecting to wrap things up fairly quickly, but all credit to my opponent and me seeing ghost mating ...

Re: How do you avoid disputes at the board?

Thanks for that tip Paolo, bookmarking now, I forgot we have entered the 21st Century! It must be those "miniature chess games" by J du Mont recently purchased that I am reading, transcending me back in time! I just thought a small print copy in a dimly lit room with his clock running, might force t...
