Re: ECF Membership

I don't know for certain, but did the Lancs/G Man thing kick off partly because Lancs thought or perhaps think that players "belong" to them and shouldn't have the right to decide for themselves who to play for, if at all. You might think that, I couldn't possibly comment For the record, G Man are ...

Re: Losing on time when your opponent defaults

On one occasion my opponent failed to turn up on time and so I started his clock. But I was white and I hadn't made a move. One of the opposition team glared at me, so realising my mistake I very hurriedly made a move - in fact I picked up the wrong pawn and found myself playing the Bird's Opening, ...

Re: Opponent Made An Illegal Move In A League Game

In a league game in Hull, over twenty years ago, I had the white pieces and perpetrated the following masterpiece: 1. e4 e5 2. Bc4 Nf6 3. d4 d6 4. Bxf7+ Kxf7 5. dxe5 Ne8 6. Qf3+ Kg8 7. Qb3+ d5 And here, after a very long think, I played 8. e5xd6 en passant check. My shocked opponent resigned and wen...

Re: Out of print books that shouldn't be...

A book called "The Soviet Chess Conveyor" by Mikhail Shereshevsky, published in Sofia, Bulgaria, 1994 (english language). Chess book reviewers seem to have overlooked this outstanding book. Very hard to find a second-hand copy. Shereshevsky is a very talented writer. Shereshevsky may be a very tale...

Re: Chessbase is not putting its mouth where its money is

Why doesn't ChessBase support Linux? Because it's uneconomic for them to do so.

Re: Grade please?

Years ago I beat a much stronger player who was particularly upset over the result when I revealed my grade. In order to soften the blow I added, "If it's any consolation you're the strongest player I've ever beaten." What I meant was that I must have been lucky, but for some reason what I'd said up...

Re: Chess Pairing Programs

SCID is okay, but a major failing is that though it can read PGN files it can't write them. I know little about SCID other than taking a couple of minutes to download and install it. However the write to PGN option is certainly there, both as one game (useful for bloggers) and as a whole file. Both...
