Re: Death of a congress ?

Good afternoon David The event will certainly not be cancelled this year, everything is in place. It is just that the organisers are predicting the loss as being in 4 figures which puts the future of the event in jeopardy in its present format. I am sure that the advice that is being posted on here ...

Re: Death of a congress ?

Thanks for your input Adam, I will pass on your advice to the relevant parties. I am not directly involved with the congress organising, although I am arbiting there this year again. I just find it extremely soul destroying to see organisers putting so much time and effort in and when all their effo...

Death of a congress ?

Could we see the death of one of Devons major congressess? The East Devon congress could well fall foul of the current financial climate. We are all aware of the' drop-off' in entries at congresses, but an alarming situation has developed at this congress. Entries for this congress have dropped of s...

However if you pm me with the questions you would like asked, I will endeavour to obtain the information you require on the Exeter...

Re: Minutes from Birmingham League meetings last night

Alex Condolences for your valiant attempt at dragging the Birmingham league into this century. Many years ago I played for Kynoch and was playing in a lower league game away at Bushbury. With the game poised at 2.5-2.5 I was involved in a B+3P V N+2P ending. My opponent offered a draw but my captain...

Re: The makings of a good arbiter

Steve Boniface was the person who convinced me to be an arbiter,he was certainly the best I have ever encountered. He once said to me " there is one thing an arbiter needs above ANYTHING else - common sense!". He also said" be pro-active, don't wait for someone to give you a problem - get there first...

Re: Michael Stoop (1922-2010)

Michael will be sadly missed, he was one of the nicest people I have ever met in the chess world. An absolute nightmare for anyone who ran a tounament as he always did his trick of turning up at the start of a tournament late with a smile and an excuse. My favourite memory of Michael was of a tourna...
