Re: European Youth Team Chess Championships 2016

- Adam just lost, regrettably - Matthew now playing on his increment with 10 moves to make to the time control (Q, 2R and 3 pawns each, Matthew has his passed h pawn but his K is very exposed). Not looking great - Pavel now a pawn down, also not looking great - Akito probably now slightly worse too :(

Re: European Youth Team Chess Championships 2016

After 2.5 hours:
- Matthew now under significant time pressure. About 5 mins plus the increment to make about 15 moves.
- Sadly, looks as though Adam will now lose
- Pavel coming under a lot of pressure now
- Akito's opponent is defending well against Akito's big attack

Re: European Youth Team Chess Championships 2016

After two hours...: - Matthew continues to be well behind the clock, now at about 20 moves (Matthew has about 24 minutes plus the increments to make a further 20 moves, I.e. Nothing serious yet). Material remains level. His opponent has managed to castle queenside and has Q, R, N and B huddled aroun...

Re: European Youth Team Chess Championships 2016

At 90 minutes in the board by board synopsis is as follows: - Matthew has used an hour to make 16 moves vs his opponents 30 minutes. Slightly odd position with both kings stuck in the middle. Level in material terms, Not sure who will be the happier at the moment. Both have weaknesses, Matthew proba...

Re: European Youth Team Chess Championships 2016

Getting back to the topic, round 2 is underway....as mentioned previously today's match against Slovenia B is not on live boards so I will periodically report in on progress....

Re: European Youth Team Chess Championships 2016

I assume juniors being under-graded and unreliably graded is equally a problem in other countries as it is here? In my limited experience, whilst that problem does exist it is less true at these sorts of events where most of the players are older, are very experienced competitors, and indeed many a...

Re: European Youth Team Chess Championships 2016

Pairings for round 2 = Slovenia 'B', with black for us on boards 1 & 3. No live boards for that match, so I'll do what I can to keep the audience up to date. On paper we outrate the Slovene team, but no complacency - they took three draws off a strong Poland team today. Signing off for the day to wa...

Re: European Youth Team Chess Championships 2016

Pavel lost, unfortunately.

So England 1 : Israel 3. Congrats to Israel and especially to Akito - overturning a circa 170 point rating difference.

We will see what the pairings bring for tomorrow....

Re: European Youth Team Chess Championships 2016

Adam just lost a tight one, Akito just won. Pavel fighting on but an exchange down. Matthew a passed pawn down but with counterplay. Playing on his increment as he has been for the last five to ten moves, about three moves to get to the time control.

Re: European Youth Team Chess Championships 2016

Yes live boards seem to be all stuck. Just took a break from watching the cycling and/or tennis to pop back into the tournament hall....all four games still going. Akito retains his pawn advantage and - at risk of invoking the commentator's curse - his position looks quite comfortable. Pavel defendi...

I should add that the reason there are no live games showing for matches 5 & 6 (respectively Slovenia A vs Czech Republic, and Poland vs Slovenia B) is that they aren't being played on digital boards.

Am happy to report that we are indeed black in that game (Akito's)
