Re: Brian Eley

I am aware of the Red Notice, but there is no ranking involved. It is a list running to several thousand of fugitives wanted by national jurisdictions, either convicted or merely accused of serious crimes, including child sexual abuse. I don't believe there is any added significance to being on this...

Re: Christmas 'Chess' presents

I was once given, thanks to a mutual secret Santa, one of those hideous glass sets from a girl I worked beside at work. She had a degree in Egyptology, I gave her a Cleopatra statue which thrilled her to bits. I waited a month or two and dumped the glass set in a charity shop. I wonder if her versi...

Re: Advice on return to OTB chess

I also stopped playing with a grade of 175, and played no online chess. The only difference is that I stopped in April 2018, simply because I wasn't enjoying myself. When I first considered returning, in September 2021, I also had a grade of 2013. When I finally did return a year later, I was ungrad...

Re: Karpov "hospitalised and in a serious condition"

It doesn't seem too hard to figure why there are multiple accounts when you are dealing with a country currently under heavy sanctions that has likely restricted the access of most of the Western journalists, leaving them to do the report largely via guesswork or outright making the facts up as the...

Re: New rating list is out

I've just returned to chess after a four year gap. I expected to be a little rusty, at the very least. I have won three games against players rated between 200 and 400 points lower than my old grade converted. My rating has gone up by over 100 points. I now expect to be an IM by Easter.

Re: Carlsen resigns on move 2

If I'm understanding correctly, it's not just the moves that reveal an OTB cheat to a top GM. It's also speed of move, body language, etc. It's even possible that all that inaudible buzzing actually does manifest itself in some visible way. The GM might be seeing something subconsciously without rea...

Re: Carlsen resigns on move 2

The top players who have expressed an opinion seem very skeptical about the 100% perfect game at 11 mins 38 seconds into the video, with it's stupendously brilliant N manoeuvre to h2 to stop the white King moving in the endgame: Have I not read somewhere that his opponent's play in this game is als...

Re: Carlsen resigns on move 2

I appreciate it's a long thread but I have linked to a video explaining how someone would do it without needing an accomplice, so your argument is wrong If he could actually do what he suggests, even with rudimentary equipment, I might be convinced. He says that a4 could be communicated by buzzing ...

Re: Carlsen resigns on move 2

If I was on a jury I would remember the case of Sally Clark, who was convicted of murder after the cot death of her two babies. There was no physical evidence, and the prosecution case relied pretty much entirely on the opinion of an expert witness. It took two appeals, and the eventual exposure of...

Re: Carlsen resigns on move 2

THis kind of case is obviously unusual from a legal perspective because the kinds of proof neutrals or those siding with Hans are calling for are obviously hard to come by, unless we get lucky, like with Rausis. So therefore the next best thing is to respect what those with the best detective skill...

Re: Arbiting Question

I don't think anyone has answered the question I posed a while back, which is whether a player can be compelled to press his clock. In a game with increments it matters. You have less than a minute on your clock, your opponent just under five minutes. You initiate a long sequence of forced exchanges...

I think I'd have played one more move before resigning. Ka4 - you never know!

Re: Arbiting Question

Is it correct, even required, to leave their own clock time running? Does it make a difference if a clock is being used which counts the moves? It is certainly not required - you are entitled to press your clock even if your opponent has moved before you do so. And it means you get your increment a...

Re: Arbiting Question

I have occasionally encountered an opponent who makes his move after I have made my move but before I have pressed the clock. I find this action distracting. That is presumably why they do it. Is his action legal? It's legal. I presume they do it to save a second or two. I really can't see where th...

Re: Carlsen resigns on move 2

How is otb cheating done? I have no idea! I am at the basic level of detection whereby if my opponent starts going to the loo every move then I start to feel uneasy. There have been a few opponents who clearly found a way of doing it while remaining at the board. I can usually tell by their body la...
