Re: ChessGames Honours Forumite

Not the situation here, but I've never understood why the line with the shortest mate is "best". If I've got a choice between sacrificing material for a forced mate in 6, or taking my opponent's queen - I take his queen. Less possibility of my having overlooked something, and he'll almost certainly ...

Re: Times cryptic chess clue

Sorry both, but I'm not with you on this. I rather like the more "modern" clues Sorry, I don't see your point. In what way is using "not me" to cover just about anything "modern". Lazy, perhaps. I missed this at the time. "Not me" isn't referring to just about anything, it works because it's referr...

Re: Media comments on chess

I can't see anything wrong. Black has his watch on his left wrist, so one assumes he is right-handed and would prefer the clock on the other side of the board, but presumably the arbiter has decided otherwise. And, somewhat unusually, the game has started 1 Nf3 Nf6 2 Ng1 Ng8 and black has forgotten ...

Re: Richmond & Twickenham Chess Club: New Venue

As the Richmond and Twickenham Chess Club is no longer located in either Richmond or Twickenham perhaps the members should consider changing the name to the Teddington Chess Club. Like St Domingo FC, which became Anfield FC because that was where they played, and Walton FC when they moved to their ...

Re: Nigel Short is on the mend

https://chess24.com/en/watch/live-tournaments/vergani-cup-jan-2022/2/1/10 On reflection. I wonder how many members of this forum would expect Nigel Short to resign a game against them in that final position? How many would take a draw on the spot if he offered it? It's all very well finding the righ...

Re: Nigel Short is on the mend

I can only say that if I had been that kid I would have been pretty upset at the comment. It's not hard to see the implication, intended or not. And I may not be the only one, because Nigel Short's Facebook page now reads. "Yesterday I was completely outplayed by this young Italian boy, rated just 1...

Re: Nigel Short is on the mend

I've read that comment several times and I still can't decide if the inference is that the kid was cheating. I think it isn't. I can understand playing on in a totally lost position against someone you think is a much poorer player than you, but that's not the reason given. If you are going to play...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Why is it called a 'circuit breaker'? A circuit breaker cuts off circulation completely. The problem is then fixed and circulation is restored. If the problem has not been fixed the circuit breaker cuts off circulation again. If you apply that to covid it means every single infected person in the wo...

Re: Chess Questions in Quiz Programmes

I believe before appearing on many quiz programmes you will be asked formally or informally what your interests are. I've always wondered if you should tell the truth or lie through your teeth, though I suspect the likelihood is I'd end up being asked on screen about my supposed lifelong interest in...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

It seems to be widely reported that the U.K. Health Security Agency has said that there are currently 10 patients in hospitals across England, aged 18 to 85, diagnosed with omicron on or before admission, with the majority having received two doses of coronavirus vaccine. Can we assume that those nu...

Re: Start Date of Next Lockdown?

I don't see it as being implausible that case numbers should continue to double at the same rate from a small base for quite some time. I did see a report in the Times the other day that said that experts were predicting/estimating that if delta continued at current levels, and omicron continued to ...

Re: Sexism in chess

Doubtless there are plenty of women who think they are missing out by not being a member of the cabal at, say, the local golf club. I can't imagine there are many who take a look at their local chess club and bitterly regret that they gave the game up as a teenager.

Re: Clock accommodation for a disabled player?

I've some experience of this in league chess. No problem until the occasion I got short of time, with no increments, when it became very difficult. When I got to five minutes I stopped the clock, and said to him that having reached the point where I no longer had to record the moves, there was no wa...
