A good call, yuk..
Er, Qb2 was played two moves later, so not 100% accurate as a call.
Sure, but can you find a refutation to the twin threats along the a1-h8 diagonal (Rxd8+ etc) and the simple cxb7? The queen would have been defending the c1 rook.

Re: CJ Banned?

Loz Cooper, who organises the British championship? Who would have the capacity to do the banning? I assume it is only a handful of people. I don't organise the British Championship. It comes under the Director of Home Chess so I have no say in this or any decision relating to the British. Pretty s...

Namecheck for David on chessbase: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=7356 Ray Edwards is in the foreground of the third picture down. There's a large English contingent going to the Czech Open: Bogdan Lalic, Tom Wiley and Mark Lyell are playing in the A section. Myself, Dominic Foord, G...

Re: Middlesex County Chess Association: a new website

On the map provided, what does the central area count as? I'm assuming that, clockwise from the area east of 2 (Enfield), the segregated areas represent Essex, Kent and Surrey. I moved to Camden in September 2009 and enquired about playing for Middlesex because (a) I assumed that I'd moved to within...

Re: Default Times

Matt, grow up. For everyone's perusal, here's a list of just a small selection of things you've wanted to eradicate from chess:

Alcohol
Draw offers
John Nunn being considered good
Not resorting to capital punishment
Analogue clocks

Horrifying.

Re: Default Times

I do not really see any acceptable reasons to why people should be late for the 4ncls. Really? I can think of many: Motorway traffic Motorway breakdowns Railway issues Flight issues (As Roger intimated) Unfamiliarity with the venue, even if you do arrive on time. (For morning rounds) Being held up ...

Re: International Round Up 21/6/11

Thanks for providing the info and link. Are the games available? The only reason I ask is that it could have influenced Gawain's result in the last round knowing he would win on tie-break as pairing wise at least it looks like a very winnable pairing if needed. On the other hand it may have had no ...

Re: International Round Up 21/6/11

Gawain Jones won the Open A section on tiebreak at the XXIII Citta di Lucca Festival with 4/5. Close.

He got back in the small hours of the morning yesterday and was on a flight to South Africa for the Commonwealth Championship by mid-afternoon. Commitment.

Re: Going to the wrong venue for a game

What would we do without you, Matt? It might be obvious but I'm going to point it out anyway. Yeah, next time don't bother. After all, we're all going to become better people in general when we bear in mind this: Try going to the right venue that is usually the best way to avoid going to the wrong v...

Re: Local leagues and young adult particpation

Others get their entry in late, send the money to the 4NCL by accident, keep changing their teams, send me an amended team list which is actually the same as the first team list they submitted... Sigh. On a more positive note, Muswell Hill, who I captain in the Middlesex League, were represe...

Re: e2e4 Grand Prix

I had no particular problem with carrying over my place from 2009 to 2010. I just gave the tournament secretary plenty of notice. Whether or not my qualifying place being from the 2008 Major Open made the process easier, I don't know. I hope not. Also, not to pick him out specially, but to pick Juli...
