I was just reading Greg Shahade's blogpost on "Slow Chess Should Die A Fast Death" (which has probably been discussed here on here before). I guess it would mean a shorter tournament in terms of days, with pote...

Re: Prize Money is Out of Control

What private sponsors do with their money is none of my business. If you want to change things, get a sponsor on board who will fund the type of event you want to see!

What the ECF does with our money really is our business.

Re: ECF to scrap its grading system

I am currently using it to record results of graded games played between Hendon Chess Club members, and it's very useful in this regard.

Repairing DGT2010 Clocks

I have a couple of "broken" clocks. Has anyone tried to repair a DGT by opening it up and re-soldering? The most frequent issues with DGTs appear to be a dodgy rocker (too much blitz) loose connections (blitz / dropping the clock) or clocks that will turn on BUT won't go past option 1 (buttons don't...

I do try and take account of elective byes at tournaments, mainly standard congress events, but sometimes it escapes my attention.

Re: Australian format weekend chess

Not any more. A change to the FIDE Rating regulations means that *games* that have at least one player rated 2200 or above will not be rated with 60m+30s as the time control. Previously it was *tournaments*. http://www.fide.com/fide/handbook.html?id=197&view=article has the new regulations, under s...

Re: Australian format weekend chess

This format used to be much more common in Australia, but is gradually being phased out. The story behind it is ... Australia does not have a tradition of Friday evening rounds for weekend events. This is due to the lower population density, meaning that lots of players use Friday night to travel t...

Re: 2018 World Championship in London

I suggest people (and especially) clubs make arrangements to meet up casually during the event - probably in a pub! I'll be trying to do the same thing for a few of the games - maybe the forum is a reasonable place for people to try and make arrangements and/or suggestions!? I have at least four or...

Ow, yes, the probability of at least one 60+ move game is pretty high.
In round one, slightly lower probability? Also, we do have some leeway for Q+P endgames...
