Yesterday in the Times Jumbo; “Beyond compare in Lima, introduced to dull game” and “Check when boarding earlier vessel”.
That's tough without the number of letters in a bracket, but I've managed SCHOONER for the second
Corrected. Schooner is right

Re: Times cryptic chess clue

Yesterday’s Times Jumbo had “Drink with knight in damaged chair, perhaps (11)” which needs N for knight to be solved.

I agree that was a tough one, I also had the H, from the first clue I solved.

Just what I thought. Can't imagine Michael is too pleased about that one coming up every year.

Re: Chess history trivia

The U-11 from 1975 is interesting -I recognize about 10 names from that, but not the winner. (Apologies if I should remember...) I remember that one for a number of reasons. First, my brother (JA) drew with Nigel Short in an early round - I have the game score somewhere. Second, the Kings, Andrews ...

Re: ECF AGM 17/10/20

Conflicts should be resolved, not avoided. There are quite a few on the board already, another minor one shouldn't make any difference and i would imagine both are sensible enough to manage those conflicts.

My game (248) was Hayes (Kent) v Charlton in the Kent League. It was January and Murray was in bare feet!

Re: Wolfgang Uhlmann (1935-2020)

I played Shamkovich in a Lloyds Bank many years ago, black side of a French Tarrasch f4 line and I played ..f6 and ..g5. After I lost he told me I played the opening like Uhlmann, which made me very happy. RIP

Re: Remembering FM Max Fuller (28-i-1945 27-viii-2013)

I remember playing darts with Max after a match at Catford Cricket Club. His technique resembled throwing a javelin, without a run-up, and he was useless.

Nice guy though.

Re: John Naylor 1972-2020

That was nearly 30 years ago and he was so young, but he had an opinion on everything and was a fine player. Can scarcely believe this awful ...

Re: Gap between games by two players

John, I wrote mine after seeing Ian’s offering, as I think he was there in 1980! Didn’t see yours until later, but thanks for reminding me that I’m not a GM. Probably never will be.
