Re: 42 Years Ago

Mike, mine was in 1984. My excuse tends to be that I have been gradually replacing the old knowledge with things I need now, but it doesn't help when I forget to pick up a pint of milk on the way home from work...... However, back to the main point. £2,400 in 1968 is worth about £32k now, add the ...

Re: 42 Years Ago

Never mind the keypad combinations, let's get the French right. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. I knew that degree would come in useful one day.

Re: Have you a Grading Double?

Fascinating. Interesting to see my son, aged 11 and hasn't played for two years, on the list (Thomas Brown, Kent Junior congresses). Equally interesting to see that I and Stuart Brown from Hull aren't on it, given that we exchanged ELO points quite regularly when we were both playing in the 80s and ...

Re: ECF takeover potential

Actually the answer to the original question is yes. Just because there are no shares doesn't mean you can't buy the company, though there are potential legal issues about a corporate buying a charity in all but name. Buying the assets and assuming the liabilities, however, isn't complicated. The pr...

Re: British Chess Championships 2010

Stewart, I think Richard wins this one. If you said that the Board doesn't have the confidence to recommend anything vaguely controversial, or that Council can't be trusted to agree anything apart from no real change, your record may have remained perfect.

Re: Discuss revised England teams for 2010 Olympiad

Sorry all. Difficult to have an opinion without seeing Malcolm's statement. I'm abroad at the moment, anyone care to post a link?

Re: Discuss England teams for 2010

Lawrence, you will have seen that a number of people are uneasy about you considering committing your finances to the Olympiad. I have said the same thing to you in a different context, as you know. I would urge you not to do it, and look for any other contributions from any other source.

Re: Discuss England teams for 2010

Lawrence If Mickey isn't playing and you made funds available for him, given that his substitute presumably commanded a lower fee you should have a little change for some professional assistance, by my reckoning. Not that I think you should use it. You should be captain. 100% support on this forum c...

Re: Sadler Scores 7/7 in Wageningen

Let's be frank about this. I wasn't talking about fame, I was talking about cash and quality of life. Given his abilities, he will be better served outside chess. As for me, I doubt I will be forgotten by my children who will enjoy the benefits of my not having decided to pursue a career in chess, w...

Re: Sadler Scores 7/7 in Wageningen

That's different to my view. I hate it when I see a general talent waste his abilities by continuing to play chess when so many other options are available, though I am pleased when I see a little dalliance with chess as appears to be the case here. Matthew has a number of talents which will serve h...

Re: Chessplayers Stranded By Volcanic Ash?

I was skiing with the family last week, due to fly back on Thursday. After two days stranded in Geneva (which is quite a nice place to be stranded in) I hired a Swiss car and drove it back to London vie the Eurotunnel yesterday. Unfortunately I have to take it back when the flights resume.... Tip fo...

Re: Rules about drinking alcohol before or during matches

Paul, you can disagree, but I agree with Ben. If he wants to pay some of our less proficient semi-professionals some money to play against "real" players, so be it. If I was still playing (and I too used to play Board 1 in the LL for a few years), I'd quite like the opportunity to have a crack at th...
