Re: Practical Issues with Implementing ECF Membership

Getting back to practical issues, if you are running a Congress in September or October, how do know anyone's membership status if it could listed or not in any one of forty MOs, which are variable in both their speed of collection and their reporting to the central membership database? This applie...

Re: Membership database online?

Every fixture has a downloadable ics format file to allow calendar integration. Do you have many players who would use that? I have got to the point of having only one team captain in 2 leagues still posting me the results, but I think calendar might be a bit advanced yet. I am writing code to allo...

Re: Membership database online?

I have partially integrated the ECF membership database, ECF grading database and my League Management software and an example can be seen at http://www.londonchess.org.uk/ A small prize of an XL termite Tee shirt is available to the person who can spot the consequences of this integration. Don't a...

Re: New Longplay twice yearly grading...good or bad

I created my web based system for entering league match results specifically because I didn't like entering results for grading into a spreadsheet or into any of the software the ECF provided. The nice thing is that the team captains actually input the results for you. Twice yearly grading just mean...

Re: Beta XML Interface

nice web site westlondonchess.com I would have probably used the SOAP interface myself, if it hadn't been beta, but I had already loaded the dbase file I get through being a grader into MySQL (its now a drupal module), so it didn't seem worth changing. If it was available and stable I wouldn't need ...

Re: Beta XML Interface

Just out of interest, what would you be using it for? I actually have the ECF grading data in my online chess match results site, and I was curious to see how the drupal soap service module worked, so I set one up. The php code you would need to access it is below. <?php $sc = new SoapClient("http:/...

Eating fish can improve your grading

A couple of years ago I made a conscious decision to eat more fish rather than meat, having heard about the benefits of fish oil for the brain. This year at the age of 48, I achieved my highest ever chess rating, 5 points higher than my previous best at age 23. Has anyone else noticed any impact of ...

This story has now made the Guardian

Re: The Master Game

I think the books on the series are good as well. You get the thoughts of both players with the game annotations. I picked them up from a 2nd hand shop a couple of years ago.

Re: Preston Congress

I hadn't publicized it yet because I mislaid the wall chart for the minor, and so I haven't been able to fill those results in yet.

Re: ECF Membership

I originally became a member out of necessity, but I have since decided to become one out of choice, since I believe in supporting junior chess and top players. Preston congress gives ECF members (either direct or MO) a discount out of proportion to the game fee saved because we believe that it is a...
