Re: Cheating in chess

And, if you go to https://lichess.org/forum/lichess-feedback/lichess-total-games-played, you'll find that - a year ago - there were reckoned to be 1.5 to 2 million games played each day. I'd guess that it's now at least 2.5 million - which equates to around 900 million each year. Some of those would...

Re: Cheating in chess

Thanks to Matthew and Ian for drawing attention to that interview, where "40-50 people" was indeed mentioned and, later, "the majority of whom are volunteers". Apparently a couple of those people are IMs along with several FMs and NMs. The interviewee also confirmed what I imagine most of us believ...

Re: Cheating in chess

Mathew reckons as many as 40-50 people are on the cheat detection team. If they need that many then sandbagging' (in this case still not proven) will be low priority. I may be wrong but my reading of Matthew's comment ["If there are 40-50 people ..."] seemed speculative rather than a statement of b...

Of course he is being, in Jonathan's idiom, a bellend. I think you can criticise lichess for not dealing with people who are being bellends well enough on this evidence. But I don't think it has direct relevance to whether they are doing a good job with cheats.
I'll second that.

Re: Cheating in chess

The reasons why some people manipulate their OTB and/or CC grades and ratings have been gone into previously on this forum. Online ratings are subject to the same thing but are more visible and can be manipulated at a far faster rate than OTB & CC ones. Returning to - "Being accused of something wh...

Re: Cheating in chess

"Unless the child concludes, as some have, that chess appears to be a game concerned primarily with accusations of cheating and is better avoided altogether." I always thought that was one of the benefits of school sport - you soon discovered that some players and officials would cheat and you had ...

Re: Cheating in chess

I'd caution against any belief that all 7- and 8-year-olds are "tyros" at chess - but that doesn't mean they fully understand complicated rules.

Re: Cheating in chess

Sorry, Roger, but you must not overlook - that does not absolve parents of responsibility. John. Parents are expected to be responsible but it's unreasonable to expect that responsibility to extend to areas where they don't have the requisite level of knowledge. But, before we go too far down the i...

Re: Cheating in chess

Roget, you have pointed out on here a sad lack of parental reponsibility in some cases and at times acts of complete irresponsibility. You cannot expect the service providers to cater for all such things. A line has to be drawn somewhere. John. I think you're overlooking the point that many parents...

Re: Cheating in chess

Matthew. It's not my role to propose. Surely the people who set up these websites didn't believe that chess was played exclusively by adults? I'm certainly not suggesting that children be "allowed to cheat as much as they want" although some tolerance for first offenders would seem sensible. But you...

Re: Cheating in chess

Matthew. I'm probably a cautious person but, even so, I don't pore through the fine print of the rules in every competition I enter. I tend to assume that, if I act sensibly and honestly, nothing untoward is likely to happen. In the case of a 7-year-old, it's not even certain s/he would fully unders...

Re: Cheating in chess

" Chess.com's fair-play system is thorough, complex and rigorously verified by more than eight years of data from millions of games played by our own members online " Perhaps I can put this to Matthew by way of analogy. Let's suppose he was offered a Covid-19 vaccine which the manufacturers claimed...

Re: Cheating in chess

Matthew, I respect your right to disagree but I strongly feel you're wrong. I don't want to bang on about this ad infinitum but perhaps I could give you one real life example of the harm that can be caused. A 7-year-old was playing, quite innocently, online. His mother, a complete beginner at chess,...
