Re: Cheating in chess

" Chess.com's fair-play system is thorough, complex and rigorously verified by more than eight years of data from millions of games played by our own members online " Perhaps I can put this to Matthew by way of analogy. Let's suppose he was offered a Covid-19 vaccine which the manufacturers claimed ...

Re: Cheating in chess

Matthew, does the following passage from your example give the remotest hint of fallibility? " Chess.com's fair-play system is thorough, complex and rigorously verified by more than eight years of data from millions of games played by our own members online " "Verified", as I am sure you know, means...

Re: Cheating in chess

I'm not at all sure I follow that. Justin, I suggest the first question you might usefully consider is "Do the people behind the cheating allegations at Lichess and Chess.com honestly believe that their systems are anywhere near as infallible as they tell us?". If not, on a scale from 0 to 10, how ...

Except nobody from Lichess or Chess.com has ever claimed their algorithms are infallible. So it is rather dishonest to claim they have.
That's not quite what I claimed they said, Matthew.

Re: Remembering BH Wood MSc FCS OBE (13-vii-1909 04-iv-1989)

Then one issue came with an insert, "To Our Readers", which had clearly been put into the envelopes out of sight of his now unionised staff. Unless my memory is at fault, BH described one of his employees, "G", as a communist agitator. I would be interested to know whether anyone here still has a c...

Re: Cheating in chess

It's interesting too that if you query the efficacy or honesty of "anti-cheating" procedures you get a really aggressive response, which to me is a clear indication of guilt. That's because they realise that, when we indicate that we disbelieve their claims, in effect we're saying they're the real ...

Re: End of an era

What about Companies House though? There have been Confirmation Statements of no changes, as well as the Accounts, that fail to mention Eric Schiller's death, and he's listed as a current director as a result I can't say I'm too concerned as anyone newly dealing with Ray would, if they had any sens...

Re: End of an era

Recommended minimum charity trustees is five so, even with Eric Schiller's passing, they're presumably still on the right side of that - although, in this case, three are family members and can't by any stretch be considered independent. That's a situation which I imagine many would consider unsati...

Re: Junior OtB event - April 15th: Simultaneous game and analysis with IM Adam Taylor

Already circulated in Watford area, Wadih, and something tells me that not everyone can go for a break at the same time - the infrastructure just won't stand it - so there are going to be plenty of families still around. I don't know, however, how strong the appetites are for this type of event.

Re: Cheating in chess

I've been a member for a year and a week, and I've played 3400... That's a lot, fingers crossed you see a good improvement in your play when otb chess is back then. I doubt it's done much for that apart from helping me learn to negotiate some hokey opening lines I probably won't ever see OTB! But a...

Re: Remembering BH Wood MSc FCS OBE (13-vii-1909 04-iv-1989)

While aware of his reputation as a demanding employer I have to say that, as a contributor to CHESS during the 1960s, I always found BH very easy to get on with - but, of course, I was freelance and not an employee. We also met in the British championship in 1965 in an entertaining game where I know...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

I suspect that you can forget about Charlie arranging anything in Malta. This was 5 hours ago on FB: "After careful consideration of all that Malta and Gozo has to offer, in comparison with living in England, I have decided to return to England as I am missing the weather, the excessive taxes on ta...
