Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

Responding to Wadih, where he sets out para 117 from HMG's "Spring Response" document, it seemed to me that the only possible grey area was whether the two sentences stood independently, with the restriction to 15 applying to parent-and-child groups only, or whether the figure of 15 was intended to ...

Re: British Championship Congress 2021

The 2005 British Chess Championships was held on the Isle of Man. Since 1904, the British Chess Championships have not been held in Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Wight. In response to posters who felt that the British Chess Championships took place too infrequently in their c...

Yes although I seem to remember that was on an entirely separate island.

Re: Briish Championship Congress 2021

If the Scot chose the British as their national championship then they are much less likely to play in the Scottish as no norm is likely from it. Why would Chess Scotland therefore allow an event which could potentially disadvantage its own event? Maybe they might allow it to enable the players bas...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

I thought Nick's preference for taking rat poison rather than a Covid-19 vaccine was somewhat extreme, and I'm not convinced he meant it literally, but some of the verbal assault on him seems well over the top. It seems to me plain stupid to accept every computer-generated forecast as totally reliab...

Re: Briish Championship Congress 2021

Alex is right and I should have been more considerate of Scottish sensitivities - sorry. Actually, the original post referred to "people living up North" which I probably subliminally thought meant residents of [say] Newcastle-upon-Tyne rather than Inverness. For that reason, our Scottish friends we...

Re: Briish Championship Congress 2021

Yeah it's not the nicest place in the world but it will be very nice for people living up North to play in a British and not have to travel the length and breadth of the country, I will be taking a week off work for that one. Last 10 years - 3 North [Sheffield, N Shields, Hull], 2 North Wales [Llan...

Re: 4NCL On-Line Season 3

I apologise if you found the wording of my post less than acceptable. Surely the players from your teams would benefit more in a lower division where they would have the opportunity to face opponents closer to their strength whereas at the moment I see many games as total mismatches. Kings Head had...

Re: 4NCL On-Line Season 3

This conveniently brings me to the question of promotion and relegation. 40 teams might have been anticipating relegation according to the spreadsheet of 06 January; six have withdrawn and disappeared leaving 34 expecting to go down. In fact no teams at all have suffered this fate; all 34 sides rem...

Re: Patrick Ribbands

I'm not sure that I ever met Patrick personally but I was in regular email contact, most recently a week or so before his death, in connection with the East Anglia Online Club Championships which he was organising. He came across as a very genuine guy. Although Patrick gave no indication of this, I ...

Re: 4NCL On-Line Season 3

The assumptions made in this thread may be premature. I entered several teams before Wednesday's deadline, and have acknowledgement of same, but those teams are still coloured white rather than green on the 4NCL website. I imagine others are in the same position.

Re: Scott McKay RIP

Simon, please don't get stressed. You reported the death and that's fine. Paul in another thread simply said "What court proceedings". That's where I think that you should have left well alone, particularly in a case as sensitive as this. But really don't fuss. I'd agree. You do a useful job inform...
