Re: 2015 UK General Election

I should add that I and many of my friends who are SNP party members would like to see PR. Despite our once in a lifetime result last week (which we are still in shock about) we don't like the idea of Scotland being essentially a 1 party state. Finally, and this is real food for thought. Had 16 year...

Re: 2015 UK General Election

Its pretty well known up here that in the event of an Out vote with Scotland voting in, there will be a second indy referendum to attempt to retain our EU membership. With SNP and Labour campaigning for In up here that shoud secure 70-75% of the vote for In. latest polls suggest (and Polls is a dirt...

But FIDE appear to keep ignoring their own rules I am always interested to hear about such occurrences. Can you give an example? Election of 5 VPs after Karpov's defeat, which at the time was against their own rules. They have been changed subsequently but at the time it was against the statuates

Re: Kasparov vs Ilyumzhinov: the FIDE Presidency battle begi

We are never going to get 92 delegates to Montreal in 2015 for an EGA, will take massive amounts of proxies to do it! You appear to know more than most of us about the location of next year's FIDE Congress. Can you enlighten us further? I believe it was Nigel Freeman who said on the last day that t...

Re: The battle for ECU Presidential elections begins

ECU GA proclaim that Crimea is Russian not Ukrainian. http://www.chessdom.com/european-chess-union-to-follow-ioc-and-un-decisions-regarding-ukraine-and-crimea/ They agreed it was Ukranian but brought this in to cover every territorial dispute in the future. I was sitting with the Ukrainian delegate...

Re: Kasparov vs Ilyumzhinov: the FIDE Presidency battle begi

If all that fails, then the next opportunity is autumn 2015 by the Executive Board. I don't see how the EB has the power to approve an out of calendar change in the Laws. I think we're waiting for the next GA in 2016, or possibly another extraordinary GA in 2015. It's a total mess. Of course, one o...

Re: Does anyone take bets on chess?

The lads that organise the Scottish Blitz up here have had a deal with one of the bookmakers in the past so players can make bets.

Re: Chess Player Strip Searched

It seems to be a "decision" or "recommendation" of the CAA, who seem to be taking the view that "no penalty" isn't a "lesser penalty". I would have thought the ECF AGM in October an opportunity to challenge this, if it hasn't already been reversed by player boycotts. I understand that the same prin...

Re: Kasparov vs Ilyumzhinov: the FIDE Presidency battle begi

When you say "sabotage", what do you mean? In the event the meeting splintered into two with a slightly larger meeting supporting the FIDE establishment candidate who was deemed elected. If you take out the hyperbole, Roger's long-distance observations have reasonable correspondence with events as ...

Re: Kasparov vs Ilyumzhinov: the FIDE Presidency battle begi

It's a problem which grows with every time the number of Federations in FIDE expands. The quorum required is half the number + one, so it's stretched well beyond those Federations with a respectable number of players, who might be interested in the problems of defining rules against computer cheati...

Re: Olympiad

I have just received a tweet that a second player has died today. The person is normally reliable with news. No more information as yet. I am hoping it is just someone misreading the Norwegian news as they were reporting an Asian had died earlier but I have a bad feeling about this Just been told t...

Re: Olympiad

Hearing news that Batumi (Georgia) have secured the next Olympiad. Also hearing sad news that a Seychelles player has had a heart attack and collapsed and has passed away. I really hope this isn't true but I've seen three reports from the venue so fear it is. Update: oh dear it is true, Kurt Meier,...
