Re: Jumping titles

Morozevich also had a precipitous start to his career. His first international tournament was Lloyds Bank 1994, which he won with 9.5/10, smashing a very strong field. He then won Pamplona, too. He was awarded the GM title the same year. He may have gone from unrated to GM in less than half a year, ...

Re: Jumping titles

Kasparov's very first ever FIDE rated tournament was Banja Luka, which he won to gain an initial FIDE rating of 2595, putting him 15th in the world at the time. I think he went from unrated to GM in the space of a year or so,.when he won the World Junior.

Re: Very long games in weekend tournaments

To be honest, I think the player of black in this game needs commending for not losing his rag; I think I would have walked away after the first king’s tour. Totally agree. As an organiser I would ask the arbiters to do something about this conduct. As an arbiter, bearing in mind: 12.2 The arbiter ...

8-man tablebase position: mutual zugzwang (Black to play: White wins; White to play: Black wins).

Credit for the above should go to: Marc Bourzutschky.
Nice one, Chris.

Re: Othello

There's a discussion, from 2021, of work in progress on 8 piece endings here - The join would be if "forced" opening and middle game play could reach a solved 7 or 8 piece ending. But that may just demonstrate opening lines to be avoided if looking to win rather like the forced repetitions availabl...

Re: Othello

It was recently said by Nakamura that endings with 7 pieces or fewer on the board have already been solved. Nakamura must be rather behind the curve, in that case. Moscow State University published the first complete set of 7 piece endgames in 2012, calculated and stored on its Lomonosov department...

Re: Juniors with autism and ADHD

Children with autism spectrum disorders can do well at chess. However, one should be aware that the terms can cover a very wide range of behaviours and conditions. Not every child with these labels are the same, nor do they all react the same to chess. Many do well at chess, as the game has a struct...

Re: Othello

The authors of the paper speculate that, despite the size of the search space, chess might be the next strategy game to be "weakly solved" (one of three categories of solution), but this will probably require theoretical breakthroughs and improved hardware. It will be fascinating should that happen,...

A rival board game, Othello has been solved, meaning that the solution has been given demonstrating perfect play from any legal position, including the initial array. A draw! 10^28 positions; 10^58 games.

Re: Isle of Man in the Olympiad

introduced a category of associate membership for territories such as the Isle of Man which cannot become UN members or have their own Olympic teams. I'm pretty sure that the Isle of Man could seek full independence and UN membership if that was the wish of its population. I think these rules are t...

I see with the latest version of Swiss Manager, 14.0.0.70, dated 01/10/2023, there is now an option in the Tie-breaks dialog box for Bucholz for "Baku 2023". I shall enquire about this is used.

Re: Accusation against Alejandro Ramirez

I think I'll go with "offensive ethnonyms are still bad practice, even if the person being referred to isn't from the ethnicity in question" I never even knew it was an "ethnonym", thought it just meant a slimy liar. You have to be so careful nowadays. I don't even know what this word is, never see...
