Sir George Alan Thomas

Hi all I am quite fascinated that Thomas beat both Capablanca and Botvinnik in the same tournament: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chess.pl?tid=79240 Does anyone have his 1896 simul win vs Emanual Lasker as pgn ?! I might do a view videos about him for my evolution of chess style series http://www.y...

Re: The most famous combination ever?

On the start of this thread, I only happen to know the combinatory positions because I checked out some notable games of Blackburne just a few days back : http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessplayer?pid=10429 (see notable game links) I played the Scandinavian defence Blackburne Gambit recently which ...

Re: Should we scrap adjournments?

It seems though black has great play on Qe4 Rd8! If Qxg6 then Qc6! The threat to take the g pawn seems to validate the Houdini assessment of +1.89. I'd imagine it is considering best play to somehow mask the Nf3 threat and use the Qxg6 idea either directly for the pawn, or indirectly to improve the...

Re: Should we scrap adjournments?

Does 1 Qe4 not win the g-pawn at once? Anyway, adjudications and adjournments are both equally absurd and should be stamped out, of course, at least between non-consenting adults. If two grown men really want to go away and come back another night then fair enough, but making people play adjournmen...

Re: Should we scrap adjournments?

Sorry to renew this thread via a Google search but may I ask : Was I right to resign the following position (instead of sending it off for adjudication) : [FEN "6k1/p5p1/1q3pp1/1p1r4/1P1n2P1/P2RQ1BP/1P3P1K/8 w - - 0 1"] I was playing Black unfortunately. I assume because Houdini 3 was giving nearly ...

Re: Rule 10.2 (a) AGAIN then

Hi all Regarding the Southend controversy (which is a tournament I have fond memories playing in) - I recently posted about this also on reddit : http://www.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/1cet13/uk_southend_congress_controversy_rule_102_under/ Personally I agree with "Nosher" that I think 12.6 has been...

Re: BEST ANNOTATED GAME COMPETITION

Are Youtube video annotations acceptable - and they can have PGN associated with them in the description?! I have already done a few from the most recent weekend

Best wishes
