Re: 4NCL Online

"Usually I recommend juniors to disable the chat when playing games."

Yes - probably worth recommending everyone to do that! (Although I can't remember how to do it either)

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

"What I am surprised about is nobody picking up the placement of the White pieces which is normally de riguer for your regular ECForumite's level of detail." Good point - I'm trying to find the trace evidence and calmly stepping over the body without noticing it... I recall that somebody told me tha...

Re: Cheating in chess

"Actually "my account was hacked" seems important, since it is used quite a lot when someone posts something misjudged and wants to disassociate themselves with the consequences."

Does she normally post when playing?

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

"Think this is in France somewhere."

The bin seems to be labelled "Litter", and next to the railway shop, it seems to say "To Let". Nevertheless, wherever it is, that is a solid screen.

Re: Direct Members’ Representatives election

"I've heard it asked "Do they understand what they're voting for?" and, on occasion, have had to resist the temptation to observe that - on that point - the speaker might usefully look in the mirror." Not talking about chess obviously, but I often feel that the very fact that people are eager to sta...

Re: (Chess) Life Returning To Normal

"and ask players to stay at their boards for the game." Not really on for a normal game, apart from toilet and refreshment considerations, if someone suffers from a back problem (e.g.), they might need to stand up and move about. And if you stand and stretch within the eyeline of the opponent, it co...

Re: Media comments on chess

I was reading "New in Chess" 2020 (5) and it mentioned the song, so naturally I aimed at YouTube!

Re: Media comments on chess

Not sure if music videos count, but this is the official video for "The Future of History", which is partially about Kasparov vs Deep Blue. The Band's name is rather rude, so don't let children watch the video. It's safe to listen to the song, which is quite jolly, not as aggressive as some works of...

Re: Arkell's Endings

"Lawrence might want to tear page 89 out of his copy..." Lawrence may feel slightly better that it is only a comment that he's won it against you 3 times, not one of the actual games. Admittedly, his annotations are generally fairly friendly, Keith isn't the sort of guy to make abusive comments abou...

Re: Direct Members’ Representatives election

" I rarely look at the forum due to it having descended generally to great negativity"

I'm not sure it's "descended" - I thought it was always like that?

I wouldn't say that if I were seeking election of course.

Re: Direct Members’ Representatives election

If you don't publish numbers of votes cast, you leave yourself open to accusations that you have just appointed the people you want. In Gold election, I know Danny O'Byrne as he's a "War and Piece" team mate. I think he is standing as an individual, not a team and he would do what he thought was rig...

"chess is the only game I know in which you cannot cheat."

Yes - I had already included that in my (just about finished) History of Civil Service Chess and commented that he was being unduly optimistic.

Re: 1949/50 Hastings Congress

I see Harry Golombek was a bit disapproving of preparation, "Barden is a player of youthful promise who is, however, over-addicted to opening theory", "ahead of his time", surely? It was good to see the complete list of results and see familiar names there - I have even played half a dozen of them w...

Re: Cheating in chess

"Any ECF comment on the England allegations?" (Glorney Cup) Assuming the allegations are justified... I don't expect one - there has been a long BCF/ECF tradition of keeping quiet about unpleasantness. The problem here is that it is said that two of the players were caught cheating. Anyone can find ...
