You can get upgrades, now, on European students, can you? Or was that "ungraded"? :D
 *edited* - though you may well be able to!

Re: PLAYING CONDITIONS - NOT THE WORSE? SURELY?

It's all about the captain, with students. I make damn sure my players turn up. They get periodic phone calls on the day of the match to remind them of the upcoming game. I usually arrive an hour beforehand, first to buy the aforementioned fish and chips, and then to set up the equipment. In the en...

Re: PLAYING CONDITIONS - NOT THE WORSE? SURELY?

Yes Jack, I am in agreement, but in general do you really see it as a wise decision, people grow a different head when they have been drinking. Yes I'm not saying Dont have food or refreshments Jack, I was making a serious point that I don't think having alcohol whilst playing was a intelligent dec...

Re: PLAYING CONDITIONS - NOT THE WORSE? SURELY?

No he wasn’t glue sniffing, I think he just had some sort of learning difficulties - the bag just looked full of shopping. I did think about informing the staff at the leisure centre reception, where the congress was held, but I saw him getting on a bike and cycling out the gate - for all I knew h...

Re: PLAYING CONDITIONS - NOT THE WORSE? SURELY?

At the recent York congress we had a bloke walk into the tournament hall on the Saturday afternoon round and shout “Happy New Year!!!” at the top of his voice, 2 or 3 times. I was easily winning my game so found it quite amusing, but it did annoy a fair few people. At first I thought he was just...

Re: Why OTB Club Chess is always going to be great!

I gave up on Chesscube - I’ve played 3 minute tourneys there and been 30 seconds to 5 seconds up on time and my opponent has mysteriously started to get time back on his clock (there was no increment in the time controls) while mine ticked away and I eventually lost. This would happen quite a bit,...

Re: H.E.Atkins

Just checked him out on Wiki:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Ernest_Atkins - the guy looks quite similar in the face to actor John Hannah if you ask me! Shall check out some of his games after my match tonight maybe - sadly Chessgames.com is blocked at work :(

Re: Tunes stuck in your head

During my last match I had Travie Mccoy’s ‘Billionaire’ stuck in my head - I actually hate the song, but it’s played relentlessly on the local radio station the girls in my office insist on having on none stop from 8am-5pm so I think it’s had a subliminal message effect on me at this stage...

Re: Innocent Moves

If I were Asa Hoffmann I’d have wanted a bit more than 500 to be portrayed like that - the part where he is analysing his game in the corner after the tournament, finds the continuation he should have played then proceeds to have a nervous breakdown, is one of the most embarrassing in the film. It...

Re: Lucky Pen

I gave up on the concept of a lucky pen a while ago - mine was a fountain pen which I always thought looked rather posh, unfortunately it leaked in my inside pocket at last year’s Halifax Congress and ruined my favourite jacket  - it's cheap biro's nicked on the way out of work now! The luck...

Re: The worst chess book ever??

Rapid Chess Improvement by Michael de la Maza has to be a contender - I particularly like the chapter dedicated shuffling your feet during a game in order to keep blood flowing to the brain

Re: The Master Game

"Pick a famous game. Brief bio on both players with pics. Show game with low grade comments on full screen board." Rather like the Ray Keene series from years ago, where he had Donald Woods as an assistant, asking the sort of questions weak players would ask. (And some of them DW had to dumb down, ...

Re: The Master Game

Andrew Camp >In the comments on Youtube, someone mentioned that the BBC no longer owned the copyright on these.< If that is true and it can be established, then I am sure Impala would be delighted to reissue whatever can be found. I have 31 (roughly) episodes. Stewart Reuben Hi Stewart I seem to re...
