Re: Olympiad

Adams has played the Slav a couple of times in this tournament. The surprise is that he played 5..e6 after which leads (if White wants) to a position where Black is very solid but has few if any winning chances. No criticism intended but as his opponent is nearly 200 Elo points lower I would have ex...

Re: Olympiad

Can't see where any wins are going to come from today. Sadler appeared to have a good position before he decided to hand the bishop pair to Black while Adam's position just looks horrible. ...which may just explain why Howell has decided to avoid the perpetual. However he has now left himself 10 mi...

Olympiad

I was surprised to hear Matthew Sadler mention today during the Gashimov memorial commentary (on the excellent Chess 24 website) that he was still waiting to find out whether he was going to be selected from the England team for the Olympiad. Given that the Olympiad is scheduled to start in approxim...

Re: European Team Chs in Warsaw

Given the above it is strange that McShane has now thought for 30 mins on the same position (or completely normal if you consider his time usage at the other games at this event!)

Re: European Team Chs in Warsaw

4 interesting positions in the England men's match. In the McShane match 4...g6 looks strange but it is the recommendation of GM P H Neilsen in a recent book on Anti Sicilians. The idea is 5.e6 f6 6.ed7 Qd7 and Black unravels. I recall that McShane had the position (as Black) after the White's 4th m...

Re: Anand v Carlsen

I seem to remember from my Dvoretsky book that if Black can leave White with "a" and "h" pawns it should be a draw

Re: European Team Chs in Warsaw

I seem to recall that the German men's team won the last Euro championships without the services of a coach or proper payment from their Federation. On the contrary I recall huge credit being given to the coaching provided by Rustam Kasimdzhanov. This compared somewhat favourably to England's lack ...

Re: European Team Chs in Warsaw

A wry smile at Solak - Zhigalko in the Turkey - Belorussia match. Black played 20 odd moves of the latest najdorf poisoned pawn theory leading to apparently equal position. 6 moves later he could (and did) resign.

Re: Hertfordshire Congress, Hertford, 9-10 November 2013

Thank you to all the organizers of the Herts Congress which I particpated in at the weekend, it was a fantastic event.

The playing conditions and facilities at County Hall in Hertford were comparable with the best events I have attended. I look forward to next year's event.

Re: European Championship - Team ENGLAND

I bet Adams had nightmares over his game versus Grischuk (35...Qe2+ appears decisive) especially as his opponent appeared to have less than a minute left on his clock for the last 10 moves. I see McShane is playing again today, presumably with the view he needs to play himself into some sort of form...

Re: European Team Chs in Warsaw

Luke McShane looks a bit rusty after presumably missing 20...Nb4 which appears to fully equalize for Black. White seemed to have a very healthy plus out of the opening.

Re: ABERYSTWYTH 2014 BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS

I may have missed this somewhere but the above announcement indicates that the Championship section starts on a Saturday but the dates quoted are 20 July 2014 (which is a Sunday) to 2 August 2014. mean that the dates are now amended to 19 July 2014 to 1 August 2014? The Championship and Major Open ...
