Re: Something more important - LCC 2011

I noticed in an interview with the President Russian Chess Federation at the excellent site "Chess in Translation" that a best-ever line up has been announced for the Tal Memorial in Moscow including Anand, Carlsen and Aronian. However I noted that it ends only several days before the announced star...

Re: SO WHO'S GOING TO SHEFFIELD? I AM!

The 2 week long challenger sections at Gibraltar running alonside the 2 week main event seem to be a real success. I suggest replacing Major Open with these as has been mooted elsewhere. I can't help feel that the £1,000 first prize for the Major Open is a little out of proportion with the event. M...

Re: SO WHO'S GOING TO SHEFFIELD? I AM!

Adam Has there been any thought to changing the format of the British Champs. Would have loved to have played to see Adams, Short etc on home turf but using half my annual holiday entitlement for a single tournament (Major open/Main event) is not worth thinking about. I know there are shorter tourna...

Re: Candidates Matches 3rd - 27th May 2011

The last I heard Luke had come back to proffessional chess, but obviously he likes a job to get some more money too! He gave up his job in early/mid 2009 and then started work again in April 2011. I guess that makes it unlikely that Luke will take up his World Cup place, pushing Adams up the queue.

Re: Candidates Matches 3rd - 27th May 2011

"It will depend on if Luke can get time off work." I don't know if McShane's return to professional chess was ever more than an extended sabbatical but it is a shame to hear. It was only a matter of time before he reached 2700+ and with Short's return to form there was a prospect of 3 2700 players p...

Re: Candidates Matches 3rd - 27th May 2011

I'm rooting for Gelfand.

Grischuk has (not without a lot of skill) unashamedly played for the blitz eliminators but that won't really help him in a 12 match game with Anand, which I suspect would be rather one-sided.

Re: Candidates Matches 3rd - 27th May 2011

One can almost sense Malcolm Pein's relief that he had already dropped out of the running for organising the final............. Anand v any of the 4 semi-finalists does not spark the imagination. At least if either Grischuk or Kramnik gets through it is likely sponsorship will be forthcoming for the...

It is worth noting that www.russiachess.org has a live video feed from the playing hall (or rather it looks like a small room)

Re: Are Opens a little too open?

To be fair there are e2e4 tournaments and there are the rest. I now only play in tournaments very local (Herts) to me and as many e2e4 tournaments as I can fit in as they really set a new standard. I actually feel quite sorry for the organisers of the St Albans congress as they made efforts to find ...

Are Opens a little too open?

On both occasions in the first round of my last three Open events, I (grade 184) have been paired in the 1st round with an opponent rated over 40 points below my rating and at the weekend, it was 60 points. I am not directly criticizing these guys for entering the Open whilst being able to enter low...

Re: European Individual Chess Championship Mar 21st - 3rd Ap

Actually I've just checked. Its in August/September. Probably the reason why Mcshane didn't commit to British Champs this year.

When is the World Cup? Isn't it normally in December and clashes with London Chess Classic?

Re: Something more important - LCC 2011

This tournament set a standard for how world class events should be run. Can't wait for the next instalment.

I wonder if the tournament will stick with the regular field of players + 1 other (Aronian??)?

Re: Gibraltar 2011

Has Short won enough rating points so far to regain the English no.2 spot in spite of McShane's success at Wijk aan Zee?
