Looking forward to a great event but am surprised by two things: 1. The almost identical field. I realise that they wanted to keep Carlsen and Kramnik and the 4 top English players. Obviously the addition of Anand is fantastic but then why re-invite Nakamura? Surely an opportunity missed to include ...

Having lived in various parts of Russia for 3 years I can't say I blame him although it does seem such a shame as with him included we surely would have been in the running for a medal.

However it will interesting to see how the cream of England's young blood (and wise old sage on Board 1!) get on.

A brief scan of the Round 1 pairings of this unbelievably strong open reveals Luke McShane on Board 39.

He seems to have played a lot of chess in the last few months - is this a return to professional chess??

Really looking forward to the event (in my case the Challengers)

I presume the entrants for an additional section will be mixed in with the existing ones before dividing into groups so should I hold off preparing for my opponents just yet...........??

Does anyone know what has happened to the Gibraltar tournament website? It has been down since Friday. Hopefully it is a technical blip and not an indication that the tournament is in any peril
