Warwickshire Select 3 & Oxford 5 go missing, I see.

See you at the weekend. That both have tried an extra team this season is encouraging.

There are Chiltern League U150 matches this Saturday which will probably have impacted the Oxford squad and others.

Ref Oxford 5, we had virtually an entire team drop nout just before the deadline and had very little choice about withdrawing the team. We hope to be back next time.

I had an invite to play for Hampshire and replied to the captains to the effect that who on earth would schedule county/Chiltern League matches on a 4NCL weekend? Of course I knew the answer to my own question.

As it happens I was "helping" Andrew Martin with the ECF Girls Team event in Bramley.

The answer is of course Nigel Dennis who used to delight in scheduling the Berkshire MegaFinal on the final 4NCL weekend.to cause as much disruption as possible. Thankfully the main Berkshire MF is run properly by BJCA.

Counties are consulted on the Chiltern fixture list, and some dates are blocked as a result. This includes clashes with local congresses , but not necessarily the London Classic which can impact member counties within easy commute of Olympia. Unfair to expect to avoid every clash - the extent of U150 involvement in 4NCL is variable and arguably greater with the southern bias of fixtures.

It turns out that the final two rounds of the Chiltern Open clash with Divisions 1 & 2 of the 4NCL on 29th Feb and 28 Mar. That's probably down to late changes of the 4NCL dates. They don't clash with Division 3 South and Division 4.

And that was my essential point - you can make reasonable efforts to avoid clashes but they will still occur. And the impact will be variable and not necessarily obvious. Bucks as one of the four counties would I suspect be disadvantaged more by a clash with the lower sections of 4NCL than the higher. Oxon would suffer from both, Berks and Hampshire not sure. The original complaint about the clash was strong on prejudice and short on consideration of the practicalities.

The point is most counties organise themselves to avoid these clashes because our players play in both. Surrey do.

It was shame about Jon's default win in your team. He called me to confirm my lift for the sunday. Anyway we had the pleasure of playing Ben and his team on the Sunday. We managed to get games for two of our juniors so well done to those organising.

I would usually buy a sandwich, fruit, coffee at the venue but the most obvious change to be will be to bring my own food and flask. Seemed to be less room on the table too.

Hopefully JT we will get to play a game against each other with 7 rounds.

Some counties seek to avoid 4NCL clashes, other competition organisers seek to minimise clashes with the most obvious events which may not necessarily include all 4NCL events or weekends especially where the weekends are split. Neither are necessarily wrong in approach, but nor can either guarantee to get it right.

I recall an e2-e4 event which clashed with something else in the locality, but the main losers from an event held in Bucks were I think counties in East Anglia hoping to play in the National stages and finding their numbers diminished. Even in our local league dates have been excluded for the clash with Guernsey -not because it impacts the top players, but because a group from one local club enjoy the holiday events. But whenever we've scheduled fixtures for school holidays to facilitate junior participation - its been a mixed success, family holidays and also other chess events have taken priority.
