Geoff, we've also announced our dates for the 2010/2011 season (November 2010-May 2011) already, which is hopefully sufficiently far out to allow other events to avoid clashes if they want to (and the Northern League dates are planned to be the same as the "main" 4NCL dates, so we won't be taking any more weekends over and above those already planned for the "main" 4NCL.

Given the original title of this thread, maybe 4NCL should have an experimental rule for the Northern League. Every team should have at least one Scotsman in it.

Right I have had a wee nibble from Clem Sreeves but the rest of them are fearing

Back to the female player rule. I've never been a fan of 'positive discrimination' because there must of necessity be negative discrimination against those displaced, unless of course the displaced men were of of lower grade than the women let in. This doen't seem to be the case here. I can understand the argument about changing the culture and there may be something in that. The problem is that there just don't seem to be many women playing chess so that leaves very few to pick from.

I always assumed that there must be more women playing down south but a few years ago I was in a Worcestershire U100 team that reached the national finals and of the team of 12 three of us were women. We were the only women playing that I could see, it was a very big room. I believe one of the open teams should have had a female player but she was one of a group who got stuck in a motorway queue and didn't make it.

I'm surprised they find as many women players as they do in the 4NCL.

I understand Ben's point, and I think it's understandable why he chose to be indirect with his recent reply.

Chess has a large amount of neurodiversity. I use that term in the ideological sense and not the strict medical sense.
There are always going to be people who prefer a more homogeneous environment and who feel uncomfortable travelling in wider circles.

That doesn't bother me one bit - as Castro said "we don't need them, we don't want them". Let them stay in their narrow world.

Well in any large group of people there will always be a few odd types but most of the men who play chess seem pretty normal and unobjectional to me so I don't see that putting women off playing. Part of the reason may be the time factor. Even in this day and age it is well documented that women do more than half of household chores and have less time for their own pursuits. This still doesn't explain the almost complete lack of women players. I play golf as well and that is time consuming. At my golf club there are about 80 or 90 women members to about 600 men. We are still outnumbered but not by such a huge margin as in chess.
