Final Weekend - Live Games

Post by David Clayton » Tue Apr 23, 2013 10:39 pm

Below are some suggestions I have received for the live games for the last 4ncl weekend of the season.

Please feel free to add some other ideas.

Regards

David

Round 9:
Guildford 1 v Barbican 1
White Rose 1 v WGHK 1
e2e4.org.uk 1 v Warwickshire Select 1

Round 10:
Cheddleton 1 v Guildford 1
Warwickshire Select 1 v Sambuca Sharks 1
Oxford 1 v 3Cs 1

Round 11:
Guildford 1 v WGHK 1
Other two to be decided depending on league standings.

For round nine, I agree with

Guildford 1 v Barbican 1
White Rose 1 v WGHK 1

Who wouldn't? But I think the other match should be Blackthorne v Guildford 2, which will be huge. Both sides will be full of titled players, and will probably outrate on paper many or most of the teams in the championship pool - yet the loser will quite likely be relegated! Should that happen it would be by far the strongest team ever to be relegated under this new 16 team structure.

Besides which, surely there is no objective reason for showing two matches with Warwickshire ... You might show their round 10 match v Sharks though, as proposed, for the converse reasons to those above - the winner will likely survive, and it would be a great achievement for either of them.

I agree with Jonathan. From my teams prospective we do not mind being on live boards this weekend if the league feel there is a more important match. We wanted to have BCM because they are a rival to our team due to the fact they are largely Berkshire/Surrey based.

Little disappointing that Stefanova decided not to try against someone 200+ points lower rated.

I am thoroughly confused by the pairings in Cheddleton v Guildford.

Board 4 on the live games was for several hours showing Sadler v Hawkins and a sedate Slav.

Suddenly the Slav on the live games moved to board 6 and Sadler v Hawkins on 4 changed to a violent tactical game won by Sadler.

The results page is showing Sadler v Hawkins at Board 6!

What is the truth, please? Pity the journalist trying to make sense of this for an article. I am still dubious because Hawkins is normally a very sound player while Black's defence in 'Sadler v Hawkins' is casual, eg Bxh6 Qxh6 a6 early on seems much better.

Since writing the above I checked the theory and find that the opening is actually a hot line, played eg in Jones v Aronian, London Classic. It looks as if Sadler prepared it and Hawkins blinked, avoiding the main line Bxh6 Qxh6 a6 with his 11...Rd8 after which Black is simply worse and Sadler cashes in with 26 Rd2! and 27 Kb1! Good to see that Sadler has made such an impressive homecoming.

I think they had boards four and six the wrong way around initially. So what was showing as Sadler-Hawkins was in fact Edouard-Paehtz and vice-versa. It's made more difficult to check because the link to the round 10 1C results is blank: http://www.4ncl.livechess.co.uk/div1_20 ... c-rd10.htm

I am also a journalist to be pitied hoping to write a round 10 report before I disappear to the World Schools tomorrow :(

Looks like all the results are up now for rounds 9 and 10, though one match still appears to have results not filled in:

http://www.4ncl.livechess.co.uk/div2_20 ... 2d-rd9.htm

I tried refreshing that several times and several different ways, but I can't get the result to appear there for the e2e4 2 vs Barbican Youth match (three boards not displaying - EDIT: all three boards were won by Barbican Youth, the match was won by them 1.5-6.5). That would be annoying if journalists were trying to report on that or, more likely, a chess player trying to find out the result of that match. The full results and division tables are printed out and displayed in the hotel rotunda area (the website explicitly says only the cross-tables after round 11 will appear online - not sure why), but I only saw the division tables after round 10. If there were any printed division tables after round 9, I didn't see them.

About the round 11 title-deciding clash, the following notice appeared on the website and at the venue:

"Monday’s round 11 deciding Championship match Guildford 1 v WGHK 1 will take place in Room 12. Viewing numbers will be limited to allow ‘breathing space’. However, in Room 6, starting at 11.15, there will be a commentary on all 8 boards by IM Malcolm Pein"

Is this the first time commentary has been done at the 4NCL? Should be a good match. Both teams warmed up for this with 7.5-0.5 and 8-0 demolitions by Wood Green Hilsmark 1 and Guildford 1 of Barbican 4NCL 2 and Cheddleton respectively. You would have expected a second team to get demolished like that, but Cheddleton's 2 GMs and 5 IMs couldn't muster a single draw between them, though they too were heavily outrated.

The round 10 teams for the two heavyweights were:

Wood Green Hilsmark 1 [average: 2592]
1. Adams, Michael (2727)
2. Shirov, Alexei (2700)
3. Howell, David WL (2638)
4. Rowson, Jonathan W (2586)
5. Baburin, Alexander (2534)
6. Pert, Nicholas (2547)
7. Cramling, Pia (2525)
8. Emms, John M (2483)

Guildford 1 [average: 2627]
1. Short, Nigel D (2697)
2. Fressinet, Laurent (2693)
3. Jones, Gawain CB (2654)
4. Edouard, Romain (2670)
5. Van Kampen, Robin (2588)
6. Sadler, Matthew D (2647)
7. Hebden, Mark L (2546)
8. Stefanova, Antoaneta (2525)

Not sure if both teams are at full strength yet, but we will find out when the round 11 pairings appear. Guildford "only" need to draw the match, while Wood Green Hilsmark need to win. The other big drama will be in the division 1 demotion pool, where around 5 teams (all on 6 or 5 points) are battling to avoid three relegation places.

I have a vague re-collection of Chris Ward doing commentary for a round 11 match some years ago.

Would the teams have been as strong then, or have the top teams got stronger over the years?

There may also be some drama in the division 2 demotion pool. As far as I can make out, there is a chance that both the teams currently in second place in the demotion pools for divisions 1 and 2 could drop down into the relegation places after round 11! In division 1, Sambuca Sharks (2nd) play Blackthorne Russia (3rd) and while a win will see either team safe, a loss would leave either in danger (as e2e4 1 and Warwickshire Select 1 could both win). A draw would keep Sambuca Sharks safe, but may not be enough for Blackthorn Russia. In division 2, there is a winner-takes-all clash between Rhyfelwyr Essyllwg 1 (2nd) and Barbican Youth (5th). KJCA Kings (6th) can still survive if they beat Spirit of Atticus (4th) and The ADs (1st) beat Poisoned Pawns (3rd). It is difficult to work out what is going on in Division 3, as it is not clear how sum-of-opponent's scores is calculated when teams have dropped out.

I make it 6 teams batting to avoid relegation. It is possible/probable that 8 pts will be needed for safety, and, of the six teams, four have their fate in their own hands.
