surely keith, now peter wells appaz doesnt want the captain role at next olympiad, you should chuck your hat in the ring, end of the day captain is mainly there to stop adams and short from beating each other up. Youd be good in a "humor defusing" type role.
Kind regards

Congrats James you found it! Hodgson-Arkell Newcastle 2001! Not a great game really,but used in Rowson's brilliant book ''Chess for Zebras'' ;
and also in a Wikipedia article entitled ''First-move advantage in chess''.
Puzzles don't count Simon. It's got to be a whole game! What game was that anyway?
No Jonathan my game v Gawain didn't appear in any column anywhere as far as I am aware, but the Telegraph did indeed published the much poorer game v Ivanchuk.
My only games from the 2008 British to make that column were my loss to conquest from round 4(twice!!) and my loss to Conquest in the speed play-off.
Ben,if you had substituted the word ''alcohol'' for the word ''caro'' then I couldn't argue with you. Here's some quotations about alcohol:
''Once, during Prohibition, I was forced to live for days on nothing but food and water''. ~W.C. Fields.
''If drinking is interfering with your work, you're probably a heavy drinker. If work is interfering with your drinking, you're probably an alcoholic''. ~Author Unknown.
''A hangover is the wrath of grapes''.Anon
I couldn't help noticing that Terry Chapman is on the list of players for the 'Dickie-bow-tie' event at Simpsons. No invites for Stuart Conquest or myself though.
Presumably they expect us to be in another play-off for the British, and Simpsons seems to start on that Saturday

Simon, Keith
I searched back in the Financial Times and Evening Standard for several months and could not find such a position. The nearest were a stalemate draw in the FT featuring Stuart Conquest starting 1 Be8+ and an FT Topalov v Kramnik variation puzzle where the first move was 1 Nc8. I'll look out for Arkell wins in future, but for space reasons any publication is likely to be of a 'not-counting' puzzle.

I seem to have put my foot in it. As I recall the game was adjourned. I was probably thinking of Stuart Conquest. My apologies if I caused any unnecessary work.Leonard Barden wrote:Simon, Keith

One bit that was interesting was that the players, presumably, did not discuss the sealed move, despite its forcing nature. If I could spot the solution after only two seconds, then it's fairly obvious that both participants did too. I can't be the only one to be aware of disputes arising from discussing an adjournment, thus I am not challenging this lack of communication between the players. Nowadays, I only discuss an adjourned position with my opponent when I know him well, or trust him. But then, I try to avoid adjournments.
Leonard's problems in the FT are usually harder than those appearing in the Standard. At least that is my experience. Today's took me about ten minutes. I got side tracked looking at Nf6+.
It's a pity that there is not a daily chess column in the Financial Times. It could happen. Years ago there was hardly any arts or sports coverage.

Nice of Ray to put a Division 3 game between the efforts of two GMs

Your 'plaint has been listened to and ignored. In today's Telegraph Michael Adams annotates your 4NCL game against Terence Chapman.Keith Arkell wrote: Here is Arkell's challenge: Can anyone find any game, published in the Times or the Telegraph this Century,in which I scored more than 0
Adams affirms that the 'Dickie-bow-tie' contest has been sponsored by Terence Chapman.
How much coverage has 'the UK’s top chess tournament as a top media event' received in the non-chess press?

I have a cunning plan
I don't have a newspaper column with which to wield my evil power, but I do have the forum
So,perhaps each time a columnist publishes a loss of mine,I could respond by publishing a loss of theirs of equivalent shame and ignominy on this very forum
Lots of juicy Pein and Keen losses

Nice idea. Just one problem: when did you last see Ray Keene actually play a game?

The thread is stronger than the execution. I table that we trail "The worst games of Raymond Keene", sans games.
Long live the threat.

O dear,war on all fronts!
We make the rules, and so there's no need to stick to recent games.
After all,I've had games I lost in weekenders which did the rounds for years.
