In respect of Camberley Juniors we already know they have withdrawn completely (See John Upham's thread) and I assume that Chesstivus have also thrown in the towel. Barnet Knights 5 haven't appeared yet and I hazard a guess that they and Barnet Knights 4 are also destined to disappear. We'll see if Chess Innmates 3 and CSC3 return but I'm not holding my breath. If teams cannot fulfil their fixtures why do they enter in the first place?

I hope CSC3 return too Neil as this weekend our players that normally play in CSC3 are CSC2 in 3SouthA. Ok so we have Camb Uni 2 so hopefully they will not default 3 boards like Camb Uni 3 as earlier in this thread. Please feel free to speak to our captains/managers at the weekend. I have no idea why - we have 29 registrations.

I hope my lift gets back from holiday in time for Saturday. And weather & travel OK. Ouch I lost 24 rating points at Bedford.

Possibility that on Camb Uni 2 Middlesex players I'll get a chance to play again in the County U180 matches.

Best wishes all. I hope that we have a nice day tomorrow. Lots of issues for those flying into Heathrow today - high winds.

Happens in other leagues too. A message that a team cannot play in Kingston on Monday but at least that gives our captain to speak to their captain at this weekend.

I see that there are three absentee teams from Division Four (South) - namely Barnet Knights 4, Barnet Knights 5 and Check Innmates 3.

Bearing in mind the number of registrations these clubs have notified (69 & 32 respectively), I can't understand why they are unable to raise sides given the dates of the 4NCL are known months in advance. My view is that financial penalties need to be increased for teams that enter and then don't turn out.
That will include my youth team then as I finally had to admit defeat last night for rounds 7 and 8. The clash with the ECF Academy weekend was a major factor, but also the Division One teams missing players in March contributed to a smaller pool of players to pick from for Div 4 along with a local weekender also being a factor. Having gone to extreme lengths over several weeks to find two more players to complete the team I ran out of time and options with the pairings due to be published today.

"The clash with the ECF Academy weekend was a major factor"

I am surprised the Academy thought that was a good idea.

They allege that they chose their dates first, albeit there did appear to be an uncanny similarity in the dates chosen with traditional 4NCL weekends in previous clashes, the split weekend date in April was possibly harder to predict.

Probably a precautionary pairing albeit potentially still costly for the club as they may be liable to a fine for their late withdrawal.

that's why managers get withdrawals on time. but also other junior clashes as well as some families on holidays with schools closed
so see you anyway as 3 south are playing & hope you are all well!

I've considerable sympathy for those outfits, or at any rate some of them, which haven't been able to raise teams. In the case of long-established teams, where most of the same players take part from one year to the next, it should be quite easy to predict the team's human resources. In the case of new teams - or existing teams with a high turnover of players, for example where some juniors drop out and others join for the first time - it's rather more difficult.

Just to illustrate the point, Watford entered for the first time in 2017-18. Before doing so, we canvassed club members to see how many wished to take part. Based on those replies, we had more than sufficient for one team (meaning that some people would be disappointed through being omitted) but not quite enough for two. My inclination was to enter two teams and trust we would find the extra players but more cautious members of the club committee overruled me. They proved absolutely correct as, when it came to the acid test, several members of the club decided not to take part after all. A single team did lead to some disappointment through fewer games than expected but, in hindsight, that was the right decision.

When it came to 2018-19, there was more interest and the choice lay between two and three teams. This time, having learnt from the previous year, the decision to go with just two teams was unanimous. My point, in this little recital, is to suggest that it's easy for new joiners to the 4NCL, in particular, to over-estimate their resources.

"Based on those replies, we had more than sufficient for one team (meaning that some people would be disappointed through being omitted) but not quite enough for two. "

That is a very common problem - I've known near unanimous approval for entering a new competition, and near unanimous volunteering to play, lead to the complete opposite when it comes to actually playing!

another change in teams playing - and Kingston players also now have a 6-0 w/o on mon evening because of a 'can't get a team together'. at least it gives us something to talk about on the journey to 4ncl.

I see that Barnet Knights 4 & 5 are again absent from the draw. Barnet Knights 5 have not shown up at all during the season and BK4 have appeared three times. There are other absentees as well apart from teams who threw in the towel (rather than Threw in the Tal) early.

Rule 11.11 states:-

In the event that a team in the view of the 4NCL Board has an unsatisfactory default performance during a season, the 4NCL Board may at its discretion insist that that team post a bond in the amount of £250 for a team in Divisions 1 and 2 and £100 for a team in the other divisions as a condition of its entry being accepted in the following season. The bond, which will be held by the League, shall be used at the 4NCL Board's discretion to defray any financial costs incurred by opposing teams should the team, or any other team under the same management, default games in that following season. The bond will be returned to the team once in the Board’s view sufficient evidence has been provided that the team’s default performance has improved to an appropriate standard.

Has this ever been invoked for teams in the lower divisions?
