e2e4 Gatwick Congress - 27-30 May 2016
It's a bit early for results as we've only just finished round 3, but congratulations to British Women's Champion Akshaya Kalaiyalahan whose draw with Mark Hebden takes her live rating to 2303 and with that the right to claim the FIDE Master title.

Re: e2e4 Gatwick Congress - 27-30 May 2016
Akshaya's new rating above puts her up to No 27 in the world for junior girls under-20 and to No 5 in the world for girls born 2001 or later:
1 WFM Alexandra Obolentseva RUS 2324
2 WIM R Vaishari IND 2322
3 WFM Polina Shuvalova RUS 2320
4 WFM Annamaria Marjanovic HUN 2304
5 (FM) Akshaya Kalaiyalahan ENG 2303
The most important aspect of this table is that Akshaya's rating has surged to within close range, 21 points or less, of her rivals, including Vaishari and Shuvalova against whom she has had difficulty in World Girls tournaments.
Her last 11 Fide-rated games seem to be: 5/5 in the second half of the Colin Crouch Memorial, 3/3 in the 4NCL, and now 2.5/3 at Gatwick, so 10.5/11 including the draw with Hebden. A true quantum jump, just like English juniors used to make in the golden 1970s.

And there are still four rounds to go. Given that she is still playing off a rating of 2223, there is a good chance of further gains.Leonard Barden wrote:The most important aspect of this table is that Akshaya's rating has surged to within close range, 21 points or less, of her rivals, including Vaishari and Shuvalova against whom she has had difficulty in World Girls tournaments.
It also shows the wisdom of k=40, where ratings reflect such leaps in strength much more rapididly.Leonard Barden wrote:Her last 11 Fide-rated games seem to be: 5/5 in the second half of the Colin Crouch Memorial, 3/3 in the 4NCL, and now 2.5/3 at Gatwick, so 10.5/11 including the draw with Hebden. That games gets exciting after 63...d5. Looked like it was going to peter out into a draw, but both players fought right to the end.

K is the development coefficient.
K = 40 for a player new to the rating list until he has completed events with at least 30 games
K = 20 as long as a player's rating remains under 2400.
K = 10 once a player's published rating has reached 2400 and remains at that level subsequently, even if the rating drops below 2400.
K = 40 for all players until their 18th birthday, as long as their rating remains under 2300.
....so it seems that Akshaya is now back to K=20

Not until she has a published rating of 2300, which can't happen until 1st July at the earliest. Gatwick ends on 30th May which is after the cut off for the June rating list.Leonard Barden wrote: 8.56

Would it need to be a published rating?Leonard Barden wrote:8.56Sean Hewitt wrote: And there are still four rounds to go. Given that she is still playing off a rating of 2233, there is a good chance of further gains.

Yes, published ratings are the things there. I'm a case in point: I'm an IM courtesy of an interim rating of 2400, but because my published rating has never exceeded 2385, my K factor is still 20.

My first one was 2430 (and downhill ever since) so it maybe had to be after a minimum of 30 games.IM Jack Rudd wrote:Yes, published ratings are the things there. But for six months you were world #433. I never knew that.LawrenceCooper wrote: My first one was 2430 (and downhill ever since)

I'm sure Jack, Lawrence and/or Sean will correct me if I'm wrong, but this is how I see it. At this moment Akshaya, for the purposes of the exercise still 2223 (Sean gives 2233 above, but I assume this is a typo) is playing John Richardson, 2311, a difference of 78 points which translates to an expectation for Akshaya of '44. If she happens to win, not likely as Black but possible given her current surge, she would gain 0.56x40= 23 Fide points, enough raise her rating to 2326 and make her world No1 for U15 girls on the live ratings (see my table higher up this thread) by a late lunch.
