Ashton Rapidplay 9 July 2017

Post by Mick Norris » Tue Jul 11, 2017 9:36 am

After a gap of 30 years the Ashton Rapidplay is back on the North West chess scene.

The event that was held on Sunday 9 July at Broadoak and Smallshaw Community Centre, Broadoak Road, Ashton-under-Lyne attracted 68 entries from all over the region with half of the players being juniors.

Congress Director, David Hardy said "I am really pleased that players and parents supported the event as they did and we hope that the success this year means it will become a firm fixture in the local chess calendar".

The games were 25 minutes per side and were played over 6 rounds with the congress being split in to three graded sections.

Over £650 in prizes were given out with the top section of U-150 being won by Paul Woodfinden from Northwich.

The U-115 section as won by Michael Fisher from Oldham and the U-80 section by Sajjad Dehghan-Afifi from Sale.

The best Tameside junior prize went to Ross Evans from Droylsden.

Special mention should also go to local players, Tyrone Supatan who came 2nd in the U-80 section and his son Denzel (pictured) who won the grading prize in the U-115 section.

The organisers would like to thank Ashton Community Chess Club, Chess in Schools and Communities and Ashton Town Council for their generous support.
