Greater Manchester Summer Chess Congress 2017

138 competitors attended the Manchester Summer Chess Congress held at Manchester University 18-20 Aug 2017.

The Open attracted 35 competitors; one of the strongest Manchester Summer Open Chess Congress in many years, with One GM and Four FMs.
In the Final Round Leaders GM Nigel Davies played FM Joe McPhillips and Leader FM Adam Ashton played Paul Macklin. Nigel Davies drew with Joe McPhillips and in a long hard-fought game Adam Ashton vs Paul Macklin ended in a draw as well giving a 5-way tie for first place in the open.

The Major Section Attracted 55 players and was won outright by Kirs Kursed (Northwich) on 4.5 points.

The only 100% scorer was Ethan Chung (South Wales) who won the Knights section.

I thought the open was strong when I popped in briefly to grab a book or two and I hadn't even noticed Davies playing!
