Todays episode of The Weakest Link featured the following question :

"When all the pieces are set up at the start of a game of chess, how many squares are not occupied?"

The correct answer was supplied.

32 1*1 squares, 21 2*2 squares, 12 3*3 squares, 5 4*4 squares: that does indeed make 70. I suspect that this is not what the question was meaning to ask.

I also provided these options but was labelled as a "Smart ****"

Sadly, the man-in-the-street answer was the one required.

The December 22nd, 2010 edition of Weakest Link contained a final round question of the form :

"Which S in chess is when one side has no moves and their King is not in check?"

Answer given : Checkmate(!)

I'd say the clue was in "Which S"!

I wonder who sets the chess questions for TV and radio quizzes? I think I can guess...

I wonder how many of their fans knew that was their club's motto?

Did anybody see what Private Eye had to say about this team's appearance on Eggheads?

In the "Snowballs" section, it starts off by describing chessboxing and how small-scale and amateurish it currently is before seeming to imply that CJ somehow got the team of chessboxers on Eggheads to try and promote the sport thanks to a large donation by Rajko Vujatovic at the Simpsons-in-the-Strand dinner a few months ago.

It seems that the Eye is looking for something when there isnt anything, although my knowledge of ECF politics is (fortunately) very little indeed. At least the Eye didnt try and suggest that the Eggheads deliberately lost to them!

Suffice to say that the show was filmed about 9 months before the Simpsons dinner....

Yes. It was quoted on the Streatham and Brixton blog yesterday.
