Excellent results for Jonah Willow and Robert Clark in round 1.

Yes, indeed. But absurd pairing in rd 2 (Ross v. Arkell). Unavoidable, I assume. But no less absurd

British pairings he'd presumably be playing Hebden instead. Of course, under British pairings he wouldn't have got the round 1 bye in the first place.

Another curio is that by ranking by ECF grade, the top 2 seeds in the Under 2050 played in the first round.

Indeed, Jonah Willow would have got the bye instead. That would not really have helped his norm chances.

Lots of decisive games leaving us with six players on 2/2, seeds 6-10 & 15.

An excellent and entertaining win by Jonah over Nathaneal Paul today. With so many checkmates available Jonah missed the opportunity to play 0-0-0 mate; but the Rd8-g8 mate sufficed with the White King stranded on g7.

I would have chosen mate by castling but I can see the appeal in leaving his queen en-prise with white unable to stop the mate. If he'd wanted to drag it out he could have played something like Kb8 after Qxe3 and there's still no way to stop the mate.

The tension doesn’t finish even when the tournament is over :? - anyone know who the two qualifiers for the British Knockout are?

Does anyone know what happened in the U1825 section? The runaway leader on 100% after 8 rounds was not paired for the final round and is currently shown on 0 points on chess-results.

Somebody who won't be playing for a long time, if ever, one would hope.

Looking at the final rankings on chess-results http://chess-results.com/tnr388763.aspx ... =9&flag=30 it may well be you and your last round opponent, with events on boards 5 and 6 providing late drama.

His rd 8 win was a corker. Not bad for a 1200. Wouldn't have been out of place for a 2400  CCF, hhmm
