Edinburgh Chess Club is selling at auction some duplicate chess books, magazines and sundry chess ephemera that it has acquired over the years. Something for everyone! From “Chess” by Twiss published in 1787 to more recent publications – bargains to be had - some previously owned by historical greats and grandmasters! Live internet bidding available. Some nice books there.

I couldn't decypher the signature in one of the books:

so I asked for help on rootschat.com

Someone on rootschat.com suggested "J S McTear" and I think that could well be correct.

John Smith McTear was a solicitor and author (1901 and 1911 Irish censuses) and also a board game designer:
