Chess/Darts 501

Post by Neil Graham » Thu Jan 29, 2026 8:09 pm

Why has chess failed so abysmally to capture the public imagination whilst snooker, darts and even bowls has? The answer is simple - everyone can easily understand the rules of the sports above whilst chess is impenetrable and boring to the vast majority of the populace. What we are left with in terms of combinations with other sports is the ignominy of chess boxing and the idiocy of Diving Chess. So we need a new partner and the answer, of course, is darts.

Those of you who watched 18 year old Luke "The Nuke" Littler (18, MBE for "services to darts") win the £1,000,000 first prize at the recent World Darts Championship and then sign a £20,000,000 sponsorship contract must see we are missing out - contrast the couple of hundred pounds our players might win at a weekend tournament. The darts is moving out of the "Ally Pally" as it's too small so we need to think beyond the "LostpawnDudleyCopthorne" situation for chess.

Here are the basic rules for Chess/Darts 501 - they will, of course, need some polishing;-
  • Each player to win with either have to score 501 at darts or checkmate his opponent in 5.01 minutes (no increments or resigning)
The darts rules are as now - start with 501 and finish on a double

The match starts with each player having three darts and then immediately move to the chess board where the arbiter starts the clock

As soon as one clock reaches 4.00 the players return to the dart board for another three throws.

This continues until a clock reaches 1.00 (by which time each player will have thrown 12 darts)

At that time we enter the "free for all" finale when the two opponents are either at the chess board or throwing darts.

The game ends when either player has scored 501 at darts ending with a double or checkmated his opponent or a player loses on time
Chess and Darts are ideally matched - with modern technology you can see both the darts board and the demonstration board for chess. Of course referees and arbiters will be needed. All the darts players have nicknames (see above) so the selected chess players will have to find similar titles - for example Luke "The Brain" McShane or Keith "Sparkle" Arkell and be able to approach the dais flanked by security men whilst the crowd bays for blood.

I've noticed that in the darts most of the players seem to be male, overweight and resplendent in tattoos (incidentally that applies to the few female professionals as well). Chess has the opportunity to counteract this in every department.

Consequently I ask the ECF or more probably the 4NCL to immediately draw up proposals to put to the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) for a meeting to discuss - possibly on 1/04/2026.

Maybe be more creative?

Something where what you score on the darts board affects the time you have on the clock?

Or maybe even find a way to require people to hit specific areas of the dartboard to enable a move to be played on the chessboard. There are 20 segments on the dartboard, each divided into three areas (double band, triple band, single). That is 60. Find another four areas, and you have enough to cover all 64 squares. Sadly, the inner and outer bull only provide two more.

I am sure someone can come up with some mechanism whereby the darts thrown determine the move made on the board?

But that would probably be boring to watch. It would require skill with the darts.

Maybe switch it round. Make the moves on the chess board affect the darts? No, cannot think of a way to do that.

We had a social evening or two where if you scored more than x on the Dartboard you got to chose your move. If you scored less than that, your opponent chose it for you.

I think Roger has (as so often) solved the problem. Probably better suited to a bar area than a freezing Church hall.

Maybe have 'x' vary during the game? Have it low at the start and increase, and then reset? I am probably overcomplicating it...

Am trying to think what value of 'x' works best. Somewhere between 0 and 180. Most reasonably competent darts players can manage to land three darts in the '20'. Moderately good you expect to get 100. Scoring over 100 is more difficult.

There is a variant of darts called 'Around the Clock':

As far as I recall, "x" was set fairly low. I dont think any of the chess players were "league standard" darts players.

That's not exactly like with like, though, is it? The sorts of players who are typically winning £200 at weekenders are players whose world rankings are so low that their equivalents wouldn't win any money in professional darts; they wouldn't be on the tour.

I'm pretty sure that the money in darts, like chess, drops off a cliff the moment you start looking outside events featuring the top 20-50 players in the world.
But there's plenty of silliness in chess that captures the 'lesser' audiences, bullet being a prime example, which used to be spat at and derided as worthless and just a game for weak players with fast internet connections to win on time and pretend like they are actually good but in recent years the medium has gained enough credibility that there are now monetised tournaments which are massively popular with the online crowd and feature top level GMs
Any opinions expressed will not be held to account.

It's very like with like. What you have to consider is how many darts players would be competent at chess and how many chess players would be reasonable at darts. I would suggest the latter category would outweigh the former. You aren't expecting the likes of Carlsen or Gukesh to be turning out for a quick game of Chess/Darts 501. There were 128 qualifiers for the BDC World Darts Championship - I've looked at the top 40 seeds and see that 19 come from England and if you add the other UK countries that rises to 27. Just 4 of the 128 were women. So with a British governing body and the main events held in England there is no need to look any further for likely participants.

Would agree Luke is overweight very much but his bank balance at 18 years old now over 3 million pounds not and will probably double in the next year
