Jamboree Pairings
Was George Hutton a genius or are Jamboree pairings less complicated than they appear at first sight?
The 2nd SCCU Jamboree takes place at Wanstead House on Saturday, 18 April 2026. The infamous ‘Beer Pump’ is at stake.

The rating process for this is known metaphorically as ‘osmosis’ - at least that’s what the players think. We’ll have the run of Wanstead House so I guess sixty or more boards. Plenty of homework for our Rating Officer.John Upham wrote: ↑Mon Mar 30, 2026 2:26 pmWho has the enviable chore of rating this event?David Gilbert wrote: ↑Mon Mar 30, 2026 2:19 pmWas George Hutton a genius or are Jamboree pairings less complicated than they appear at first sight?

Who is this poor unfortunate soul?

The pairing sheets provided on Oxford Fusion make the process of ECF rating fairly straightforward. Just follow the instructions.

Re: Jamboree Pairings
I don't think this is the 2nd SCCU Jamboree. They were held annually for many years. I played in 1972 - see https://sccu-chess.com/bulletins/SCCUBu ... 972_87.pdf.David Gilbert wrote: ↑Mon Mar 30, 2026 2:19 pmWas George Hutton a genius or are Jamboree pairings less complicated than they appear at first sight?

Re: Jamboree Pairings
Indeed they were regular events in the past. SCCU Counties have been contesting the CMC trophy, known as the ‘Beer Pump’ since 1987 (Richard Haddrell would tell the story about how it was left behind in a pub where it was mistaken for a beer pump). And the John Philpott trophy was first contested in the mid-2000s. But this is the 2nd SCCU Jamboree after a hiatus.Neill Cooper wrote: ↑Mon Mar 30, 2026 10:01 pmI don't think this is the 2nd SCCU Jamboree. They were held annually for many years. It is great to know the SCCU Jamborees are being run again, I hope it goes well.

Looks like a tournament where the only entries are from the board squares.

Kent and Essex the only two entries for the Open (Beer Pump), so they are presumably just playing a ten board match.John Foley wrote: ↑Sat Apr 18, 2026 11:40 amLooks like a tournament where the only entries are from the board squares.

Seven team entries for the "John Philpott" which is rating restricted.
