Howell getting short of time. The increment doesn't really help in positions like this. I think Short might win this. Though there are so few pawns left, a draw is still quite likely.

I just saw the extra time appear. That is the last bit of time added on? I've been trying to find a page with the timings on, but have only so far found "approx 7 hour sessions using FIDE cumulative incremental time". Not sure what that means. OK, found it: "100 minutes for 40 moves followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the remaining moves with 30 seconds cumulative increment for each move starting from first move".

After yesterday's odds proved fairly predictive (six favourites out of six - draw in Houska was a joint favourite), I'll give it another crack today:

Howell 9/1 - Draw 4/6 - Adams 9/4
Hawkins 9/1 - Draw 13/8 - Short 10/11
Jones 8/13 - Draw 5/2 - Bates 9/1
Pert vs Pert, no offers
Houska 4/1 - Draw 6/4 - Gordon 6/4
Hunt 11/4 - Draw 13/8 - Hebden 7/4

Some interesting prices thrown up with three very combative white players on the top three boards, two as underdogs. It is a measure of Mickey's solidity with black that Grandmaster David Howell, World no. 154 and seed no. 3, comes out as long as 9/1 to beat him! I assume no-one will blame me for side-stepping the Pert family affair...

Haha; as yet, opening repertoires are not part of the model - tried it once but it was far too complicated for my middling modelling mind. Also Mike Surtees and Jack Rudd would blow up my computer...

8/13 is certainly a tempting price about Jones, but you only have to draw (or better) three times in every eight for it to become true. Looking back through the last few months Gawain has conceded draws with white against a 2485, 2446, 2436, 2419, 2327, 2222 and a 2175, as well as losing to a 2307. Of course, he's had some great results as well (like a win against Dave Navara), but the fact is that it's tough to give your opponent draw odds and still be significantly better than 50%.

Hey, Gawain's my friend and (if no-one has a bet) I hope he wins, both today and the tournament. But I'm just putting my best prices up for a conversation starter. Although... the fact that you were surfing the ECF forum rather than preparing does worry me... Maybe I'll have to go 4/7...
