Nepomniachtchi reached his peak live rating yesterday, 17th on the all time list; third in the world

He has 3 rounds of the Russian championship left to gain 6.6 rating points

EDIT he drops back to finish at 2789 going into the Tata Steel Masters in January

Still, nice to see Nepo in good form and 2800 seems very realistic if it continues. I think his reputation was as an underachiever in his mid twenties, despite being consistently in the top 20. But he does seems to being praised for a more professional approach now.

I noticed when checking Nepo on 2700chess that Mickey has gained a couple of places while inactive. Svidler, who is now semi-retired, losing a few points is to be expected. But 22 year old Artemiev losing 50 points over the last 18 months is an unpleasant surprise. I was expecting him to challenge for 2800 in the next few years.

I have a theory that the lockdown probably helps those who are diligent theoreticians, like Dubov for example, but hurts those with a reputation for being practical players who rely more on their talent like Artemiev.

As of 6 October 2018: a timeline for when the members (past and present) of the 2800 club (those with a FIDE rating of 2800 or above) first achieved that distinction, with their ages:

*January 1990 - Garry Kasparov (2800) aged 26 (peak - 2856; March 2000)
*July 2001 - Vladimir Kramnik (2802) aged 26 (peak - 2817; October 2016)
*January 2006 - Veselin Topalov (2801) aged 30 (peak - 2816; July 2015)
*April 2006 - Viswanathan Anand (2803) aged 36 (peak - 2817; March 2011)
*November 2009 - Magnus Carlsen (2801) aged 18 (peak - 2882; May 2014)
*November 2010 - Levon Aronian (2801) aged 28 (peak - 2830; March 2014)
*August 2014 - Fabiano Caruana (2801) aged 22 (peak - 2844; October 2014)
*December 2014 - Alexander Grischuk (2810) aged 31 (peak - 2810; December 2014)
*June 2015 - Hikaru Nakamura (2802) aged 27 (peak - 2814; July 2015)
*August 2016 - Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (2819) aged 25 (peak - 2819; August 2016)
*January 2017 - Wesley So (2808) age 23 (peak - 2822; February 2017)
*June 2017 - Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2800) age 32 (peak - 2820; September 2018)
*September 2018 - Ding Liren (2804) age 25 (peak - 2804; September 2018)

The peak ratings are as of the October 2018 list, and some may change later. Only five people have ever been above 2820 on a published rating list.
Ding now 2816 in the November 2018 list
We can now add:

December 2021 - Alireza Firouzja (2804) age 18 :!:

As long as he doesn't play any games between now and the December rating list that might jeopardise his 2800 rating then yes.

Arjun Erigasi crossed 2800 on live ratings today making him the 16th member of the club.

It is difficult to say anything about his style other than he calculates really, really well.

16th on the Live ratings is impressive

Giri did it but didn't maintain it to the rating list

Am confused now.

Is the number who have had published ratings 2800 or over still fourteen (with Firouzja in 2018)?

And Giri is the only one to get a live rating of 2800 or over but fail to maintain it to a published rating (as Mick points out)? So Erigaisi is 16th on the Live Rating list, but will be 15th on the published rating list (if he maintains it)?

Quite a few have come close and then fell back, the most famous being Ian Nepomniachtchi (peak published rating is 2795, not sure what his peak live rating was).

Thank you, Keith.

I see the 2700 site has biographies of the players:

https://2700chess.com/players/nepomniachtchi_ian
Highest Ratings:

Classical (live): 2799.8 (10 April 2023)
Classical (official): 2795 (March 2023)
Rapid: 2821 (November 2015 and January 2022)
Blitz: 2880 (July 2014)
For Anish Giri:

https://2700chess.com/players/giri_anish

The page does not say, but he came close three times in 2015 and early 2016.

For completeness, Giri was 20 at the time, and would have been the second-youngest after Carlsen. Presuming Giri does eventually break the 2800 barrier in a published list, he has still got around two years to do this before the current second-youngest (MVL at 25).

(EDIT [2 June 2017]: Noting here that I was completely wrong to say MVL was the second-youngest on the list - the second-youngest is in fact Caruana, who entered the 2800 club aged 22.)

Here is a real thing to bet on: will Carlsen's record of breaking 2800 at the age of 18 ever be broken, and has that person been born yet?
The answer to that was yes (it was Firouzja), see the post below by Mick Norris that I am requoting from 2021:

Firouzja reached 2800 at 18.47 years old.
Carlsen reached 2800 at 18.93 years old.
Erigaisi (if he gets a published rating 2800 or above) will go into the list in third place at 21 years of age.
Next is Caruana at just over 22 years old.

Anyone want to tip a rising star to break 2800 before the age of 18 (or before the age of 18.47)?

(Gukesh has [just] missed his chance to do this. And surprisingly, there are no players aged under 18 in the World Top 100 at the moment. All the rising teenage stars are over 18 now.)

I think 1 learning outcome from this thread is that predicting the next player to break 2800 is hard

And that breaking 2800 is actually really hard to do!

I am going to cheat and pick Gukesh to be the next one to break 2800.

IMO at least, only published rating should count here.

Why? The point of an interim rating is that the player has nailed it down, and all they have to do to turn it into a published rating is to stop playing chess until the end of the month. It would of course be a great shame if they actually did that.

This is how FIDE titles conditional on rating are treated.
