Presumably walking races are subject to the same WADA requirements as other sports if in the IOC.
In order for chess to be in the IOC, the WADA requirements have to be met. Thus there is drug testing in chess. For the UK chess being in the IOC has very few advantages. This is not true for other countries.e.g. Barbados Chess does well out of the connection.

I wasn't thinking of racing. I have retired from poker 5 years ago as I was no longer making money at it. I have never heard of anybody extolling the value of poker for people's health. I was told GM Tibor Tolnai said he preferred poker over chess as there was nobody over 2300 strength.
Of course if you continue playing poker it will be good for certain aspects of your mental condition.

They're actually mostly actively anti competitive - I'd struggle to call much of what they organise walks
What they do does have very real population health benefits of course, which seems to be where there current Government funding is coming from.
I can't actually think of any fully competitive thing that involves simply walking off a track - people just run it instead! Hence fell running/orienteering/mountain marathons etc of course, none of which are related to the Ramblers in any sense. Stuff like climbing is the BMC if anyone.

The Sport England interpretation is that physical activity is a necessity (even if only to launch model aeroplanes), but competition is an optional extra.

Yes, Roger is right. Goodness knows how they got it. I'm a rambler - but I wouldn't touch the RA with a barge pole and I'm certainly not governed by them. Once someone suggested that because they were my governing body I should do what they said. Whoever it was got short change.

The most baffling thing with classifying the Ramblers that way is definitely that they do precisely no governing in any usual sense. Deserves money from the pots for encouraging public fitness though, so whatever stupid formalism it takes I guess
