"It's a brutal, brutal game of chess." (Comment at the end of the Ireland-France first half)

Why is ITV paying these people good money to commentate when they don't even know what game they're watching?

Coming from the macho world of Rugby (I am right, aren't I? We're not talking football?) I think that must be the best compliment chess has ever received!

Chess and life are inextricably intertwined. But chess is much more complicated than life.

The old tag was: Life is too short for chess - but that's the fault of life, not chess.

I have forgotten to whom the second one is attributed. The first is clear, its me. Origin today.

Today' 1pm Local News included a story about schoolchildren in a State School doing very, very well in Mensa Tests.
The school is Heathfield in Hammersmith. Throughout the item, the large group, of about 13 year olds, were playing and discussing chess. It was mostly boys, but not entirely.
You see their chess coach, obviously enjoying himself. It was Peter Sowray.

Earlier this evening 6-30pm Radio 4; The Brig Society, a comedy show hosted by Marcus Brigstock, talked about the House of Lords.

Marcus said that bishops of all religions should be in the House of Lords - including chess.

Chess tutor saves kids from knife attack: in various places but this is the Washington Post.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Headline in "The Independent" "Radar" today, "The endgame when a silent-movie master met the genius of the absurd". Bizarrely, this related to a meeting between Buster Keaton and Samuel Beckett.

The latter is of course the answer to the question, "Who is the only Nobel Prize winner to have played first class cricket?"

Talk Sport - Kiev v Chelsea. "It could be a chess match, this". Better chances but still 0-0. Looking capable at the back, lively on the break.

Twisted ankle on a big jump off a train - cannot even limp to the pub to watch.
Hope to recover for chess match in London League on Thursday.
But will take the shinpads along anyway as it could be a bit violent without arbiters.

I’ve had a kid turn up to one of my tournaments wearing full football kit including shin pads.
