The live game has stopped at move 27 in a totally drawn position, but the results page currently shows 1-0 to Knott....Jonathan Rogers wrote:Liquidating to a dead drawn position seems to be the most that Howell can achieve. Has to be said that Black v Simon Knott is not an ideal pairing when you have just lost a game and desperately need a win to get back on track. (As soon as I typed that, they agreed a draw).

Re: Hastings Results
Correct results now posted.
Apologies, I misread the board number on another scoresheet.

Re: Hastings Results
Nice finish in Flear-Longson, although another tough day for home players.
Re: Hastings Results
Flear-Longson 2012 followed Rossiter,P-Flear 1993 Hastings Op. Longson played 13... c5 and after 14.Be3 h6 Flear played 15.Nxf7!?
In 1993 Flear played 13... h6 and Rossiter 14.Nf3... And that game was drawn in 81 moves.

Re: Hastings Results
Round 8 - the highest board for an English GM is 5 and it is Flear.
GMs D. Howell and K. Arkell are languishing on boards 16 & 17.

That was a shock when I looked at the results. Any English (or UK) success stories?

With his win today a certain FM (David Haydon) may be on course for an IM norm.Christopher Kreuzer wrote:http://www.hastingschess.com/2012/SMWSi ... nking.htmlJohn McKenna wrote:Round 8 - the highest board for an English GM is 5 and it is Flear.

Re: Hastings Results
Off the top of my head - Haydon & Waddington have been doing well considering their ratings. As has Talsma of Ned.

Re: Hastings Results
Hayden now needs a draw tomorrow v 2417 or a win against 2048 opponent.
Eames still playing also has norm chances but needs 1.5 with a 2411 opponent tomorrow or 2 with a 2006 opponent.
3GM norms, 5 IM norm and 2 WGM norms were possible today Pon can no longer get IM norm.

Re: Hastings Results
I think if you look at the rating performances Waddington & Talsma are only performing at their expected ratings (admittedly Waddington has played an unrated player)John McKenna wrote:Off the top of my head - Haydon & Waddington have been doing well considering their ratings. As has Talsma of Ned.
I think anybody performing at +1.00 is doing well, and there are 4 players playing around and above +2.00
Re: Hastings Results
Thank you, Alan Walton, for the statistical clarification and to Alex M. for the norms info.
Admittedly my post was subjective not statistical, so the pairing Talsma-Howell gave me the somewhat one-sided impression Talsma was doing well.
And, in the case of M. Waddington, he seems not to have been active in international chess for several years and therefore his rating is a vintage one but it seems to me be one that has aged well on this performance.

Re: Hastings Results
I think this healthy list is evidence that Hastings is becoming a pretty good event for norm seekers. Congratulations to all involved. The contrast with the London classic Open couldn't be starker. Partly it is probably down to the accelerated pairings working as wanted, but also Hastings doesn't seem to suffer from the lengthy "tail" that London has. London is reaching the sort of situation where a minimum rating for the "Open" tournament should be seen as almost necessary - there is no real reason why an extra section couldn't be introduced for lower rated players now that so many people are getting FIDE ratings. Or at least have an extra section to give players the option even if some still want the chance of playing a higher field.Alex McFarlane wrote:Subject to confirmation
