Paul, I am guessing you are too young to remember the sloping tables at the Maidenhead Library. Depending which side of the table you were on the pieces had a tendency to gravitate towards the kingside or the queenside.

Being highly pedantically fussy about this, wouldn't it be more accurate to say, "depending which side of the table white was on"?

I played there once as a kid, but sadly only remember the Latvian gambit and security chasing us out.

Generally all posts in my personal capacity and do not represent the views of eg Maidenhead chess club, yada, yada, yada. But as Maidenhead secretary I'd like to say not only do we offer competitive chess in a friendly atmosphere, but also on a level surface. I hadn't realised the second part worth mentioning until now!
