One billion viewers named and disputed here. Elsewhere, AGON claims earnings of $15 million from online views but, alas, won't supply evidence. And Malcolm Pein gets himself a GM title

Russians held the title from 1958 to 2000, except for a three-year period
Not all Russians and doesn't he mean 1948?
Meanwhile Dylan Loeb is back and not quite concentrating:
he never got another shot at the title because he never again qualified for the Zurich Candidates tournament

Bloomberg and the BBC World Service have US reports about Kirsan, suggesting he should not be in charge of a rising in popularity game. Affects sponsors. Also about UN Sanctions, abuse and corruption. Also why he cannot be at the match.
Sponsors wanting to sponsor. Rising numbers of young children.
Watch how the USA will react on this. Interesting stuff.

Searching for Bloomberg Kirsan comes up with several articles.Gary Kenworthy wrote:Bloomberg and the BBC World Service have US reports about Kirsan
This one has already been linked

This one just mentions chess and Kirsan in passing.

This is one (from April 2016) about the relationship in Russia between chess and poker also mentions Kirsan

Re: Media comments on chess
I only happened on this article last night.
In Tuesday 29 November Times 'A pawn in Putin's game? Chess star fights for his nation's pride.' On page 13 and over half a page.
Written by Will Pavla in NY.
Nothing new in the article. It repeats the nonsense of more than a billion people following the game online.
Sergey said he switched from Crimea to Russia long before the annexation because he hd no support in his homeland.
Bruce Pandolfini said that the interest in the match did not quite compare to the Fischer-Spassky match.
By the way, Karjakin, after the Hastings Premier, when he was 12 years old and already a GM, stayed at my home with his second for five days.

Jovanka was on Radio 4 on the "Today" programme this morning (about 1h41m from the start), and rumour has it that she may be on Newsnight tonight.

There was a BBC world service one at circa 4.15 a.m. associated with Bloomberg News. Not quiet saying Kirsan should go, but getting close. If you want sponsorship, no Kirsan, was also the message.

Re: Media comments on chess
Business sponsorship isn't so easy to get. For some years Kirsan was supporting FIDE from his own pocket. How much for I don't know.
It is hardly surprising that many of the federations thus supported him. Now, due to the US, he is not providing any money. Indeed he seems to be costing FIDE money. The next election is in 2018. There was a proposal at the General Assembly to get rid of him, but it got nowhere.
Why didn't he get his aliens to join FIDE?

Re: Media comments on chess
best listen to it, the comments from the American lady, were essentially, there is a queue to sponsor chess, the issue is Kirsan
Separate from the broadcast : Plus retaining a sponsor we know is also important.
