By the way, does anybody else find that when they access the match site, some headlines flash up on the mian page for about half a second before the video cuts in? Where are these headlines otherwise displayed?

Surely it was more a case of Gelfand collapsing than Anand doing anything at all. Doesn't say much for the challenger's self-belief, imho.

Still a good opening choice from him though (maybe it is no coincidence that the only time previously Anand had winning chances - Game 3 - he also went for a fairly offbeat line) But yes, the comparison with 1995 - and Vishy as victim then - has already been made........

I do wonder if Gelfand was aware of the "shortest ever WC loss" stat mentioned above?? I would have been tempted to drag it out a few more moves, if so

What's up?
Here a few pages ago, during the initial draws, it was remarked that Anand wasn't a '190', or come to that a '150', player. Then in game 7 Anand played like a '190' (on a bad day) and Gelfand actually managed to play like a '150' in the 8th.
Any comparison with the first two decisive games in the WC in NY 1995 implies that something's not right.

I guess 150 & 160 players can play some quite reasonable stuff.....
Interesting this `form` arguement....
Look at Chelsea...many say they have been `pretty average` this season..yet they somehow walk off with the European Cup. Mind, I thought some of the football looked pretty off-beat at times, but the win over Barcalona was very good. They doggedly stuck to the task..
But what effects performance... I bet if you were stuck in a box with cameras pointing and all the other things that surround these matches, it might effect things. That setting almost looks like something out of an H-block scene. And Gelfand seems to pace round looking uneasy....
Maybe these championships should be played as 10 man, all-play-all, double round tournament...with the top guns fighting it out over a 4-week battle at some top flight venue.
