It's nothing to do with old grades. Roy Zhang is down as pin [seed] 18 when he should be seeded 2 based on last years grades. They've done the pairings based on pin numbers so its a bit of a cock up, unless he entered after the pairings were published.

It's nothing to do with old grades. Roy Zhang is down as pin [seed] 18 when he should be seeded 2 based on last years grades. They've done the pairings based on pin numbers so its a bit of a cock up, unless he entered after the pairings were published.

Fairly sure Roy entered late after the pairings were done and his opponents grade has shot up so he was probably the one that was down for a bye but wouldn't have been if new grades were used hence I still think a combination of late entry and old grades. I see no sense in using grades over a year old for junior tournaments in the second week.

Don't know, but if it helps it's usually been around teatime on Sunday in previous years

The U14 was a combination of late entry, uncertainty over a player going to turn up and minimum disruption to an already published draw.

The Championship and Major Open will be published at about 8 this evening. Players in the MO have until 6pm to transfer to another event.
The Championship draw is not published on Saturday as it is prudent to wait. It is amazing how often a player takes ill on the rest day (or fails to recover) and needs to pull out for at least 1 round.

Normally the higher rated would keep colour sequence but as Short has had BWBWWBW I think he would have black and Adams who has gone WBWBWBW would break his sequence. Having said that I dimly recall some rule that you only check back over 3 rounds in which case Adams would keep sequence

I should add that there's a lot of chess to be played before that possible scenario occurs. Having to play black against first Adams and now Short is certainly a test of how strong Gawain is now as a 2600+ player.

Under FIDE pairing rules, Loz is right. Adams would be white in accordance with E3 below.

Colour Allocation Rules

For each pairing apply (with descending priority):
E.1 Grant both colour preferences.
E.2 Grant the stronger colour preference.
E.3 Alternate the colours to the most recent round in which they played with different colours.
E.4 Grant the colour preference of the higher ranked player.

However, I don't know the answer under British accelerated rules which we have already established is what is being used in the British. I can't find a copy online anywhere.

Acceleration stopped after round 3 though rd 4 would have been the same under either system.

The "Rules for Seeded Swiss Pairings in Britain" now state that "BWWB and WBWB equally deserve white". I think it follows that WBWBWBW and BWBWWBW are also treated equally and hence that Adams would get Black in the scenario under discussion. However, I'm certainly not 100% sure.

As you said, there's a lot of chess to be played before the scenario would arise. If it were to do so, I would regard it as a reasonable test of whether or not I understand the relatively new Rules.

However, I don't know the answer under British accelerated rules which we have already established is what is being used in the British. I can't find a copy online anywhere.

Nor can I, but the standard Rules apply once acceleration has ceased.
